[Overview] This herb is also known as Ruiren, Ruiren Kernel, White Ruiren Kernel, and Horse Eggplant. It is the mature seed kernel of the Rosaceae family plants Prinsepia uniflora Batal. or Prinsepia uniflora Batal. var. serrata Rehd. It is mainly produced in Shanxi, western Shaanxi, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, and other regions. The fruit is harvested in summer and autumn when ripe; the pulp is removed, washed clean, the seed is cracked to extract the kernel, and then dried.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver meridian.

[Actions] Disperses wind and clears heat, nourishes the liver and improves vision.

[Applications] Used for red, swollen, and painful eyes, dim vision with excessive tearing, and corneal opacity. For eye redness and swelling caused by Liver channel wind-heat, accompanied by photophobia and tearing, it can be combined with Hangju (Chrysanthemum morifolium), Qinpi (Fraxini Cortex), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), etc. For liver deficiency causing blurred vision and excessive tearing, it can be combined with Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), etc. If Liver and Kidney yin deficiency is evident, combine with Nuzhenzi (Ligustri Lucidi Fructus), Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), etc.; if yang deficiency is evident, combine with Poguzhi (Cibotii Rhizoma), Hetaoren (Juglandis Semen), etc. This herb, when pounded with Qingyan (Blue Salt) and Zhuyizi (Pig Pancreas Seed) into a paste, can be used as eye drops for corneal opacity, as in the formula Bayungao (拔云膏). Currently, it is clinically used for early-stage cataracts and vitreous opacities.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 5–9 g, stir-fried for calming effect. External use: appropriate amount, remove oil and grind into a paste for eye drops; or decoct for washing.
