The former is mainly produced in Sichuan, Hubei, Hunan, and Shaanxi provinces; the latter is mainly produced in Hebei and Liaoning provinces. It is harvested in autumn when the stems and leaves wither or in early spring when new shoots emerge, then cleaned of soil and dried in the sun or by baking.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Rhizoma Ligustici contains volatile oils, with main components including new oxypeucedanin lactone, limonene, oxypeucedanin, and 4-terpineol; also contains α-pinene, sabinene, etc. Additionally, it contains 3-adenyl-4,5-dihydrobenzofuran, ligustilide A, G, I, β-sitosterol, ferulic acid, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: The neutral oil fraction exhibits significant central inhibitory effects including sedation, analgesia, antipyresis, and hypothermia; both water-soluble and fat-soluble fractions show significant anti-inflammatory effects, possibly related to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis; it directly inhibits spasms of intestinal, uterine, and bronchial smooth muscle; water or alcohol extracts produce notable hypotensive effects in anesthetized rabbits, though duration is short; contained sodium ferulate dilates coronary arteries and improves myocardial ischemia; decoctions inhibit common pathogenic skin fungi.
