[Overview] This herb is also known as Chidengmu, Sanqingliu, Chuisiliu, and Guidadengliu. It consists of the tender twigs and leaves of Tamarix chinensis Lour., a plant of the Tamaricaceae family. It is mainly produced in Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Guangdong, Fujian, and Yunnan provinces. The young shoots are harvested in summer before flowering and dried in the shade.

[Properties] Taste: sweet and pungent; nature: neutral. Enters the Heart, Lung, and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Disperses wind and releases the exterior, promotes rash eruption, facilitates urination to remove dampness, and relieves itching.

[Applications]
1. Used for early-stage measles with incomplete eruption; can be decocted alone or commonly combined with Schizonepeta (Jingjie), Mint (Bohe), and Burdock seed (Niubangzi). For severe heat toxin with high fever, irritability, sweating without relief, and incomplete rash eruption, it can be combined with Honeysuckle flower (Jinyinhua), Forsythia (Lianqiao), and Lithospermum (Zicao).
2. Used for wind-heat common cold with headache, sore throat, and cough; can be combined with Schizonepeta (Jingjie), Saposhnikovia (Fangfeng), and Burdock seed (Niubangzi).
3. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction syndrome. For wind-cold-damp painful obstruction and chronic joint pain, it can be combined with Gentiana macrophylla (Qinjiao), Notopterygium (Qianghuo), and Angelica pubescens (Duhuo). For wind-damp-heat painful obstruction with red, swollen, and painful joints, it can be combined with Lonicera stem (Rendongteng), Spatholobus stem (Jixueteng), Moutan cortex (Danpi), Red peony root (Chishao), and Earthworm (Dilong).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–10 g; or powdered into a powder. External use: appropriate amount, decocted water for washing.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in measles after rash has fully erupted and in patients with deficiency and excessive sweating. Do not overdose when taken internally.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Contains tamarix phenol, tamarix ketone, tamarix alcohol, β-sitosterol, carotenoid glycosides, quercetin 3′,4′-dimethyl ether, as well as kaempferol 4′-methyl ether, quercetin, gallic acid, and trans-2-hydroxy-4-methoxycinnamic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: The decoction of Twig and Leaf of Tamarix chinensis has a significant antitussive effect but no expectorant or antiasthmatic effects; the alcohol or water extracts have antihistamine effects; the ethanol extract has hepatoprotective effects against carbon tetrachloride-induced acute hepatitis; the decoction inhibits Streptococcus pneumoniae, Group A Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae; the extract has certain antipyretic effects in artificially induced fever in rabbits.
3. Clinical reports: Nephritis—using 30 g of Twig and Leaf of Tamarix chinensis decocted in water, taken warm on an empty stomach in two doses daily for 15 days as one course, with 1–4 courses consecutively. Ten cases of acute nephritis in the transition phase and chronic nephritis were treated, with 8 cases markedly effective and 2 cases effective.
