[Overview] This herb is also known as Zisu stems and branches, Su stems, Su stalks, and Perilla grass. It is the stem of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt., a plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is produced in most parts of China, mainly in Jiangsu, Hubei, Hunan, Zhejiang, Shandong, Sichuan, and other regions. Harvested in summer and autumn by cutting the above-ground parts, removing small branches, leaves, and fruits, then sun-dried.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Spleen, Stomach, and Lung meridians.

[Actions] Regulates Qi and relaxes the middle burner, relieves pain, calms the fetus.

[Applications]
1. Used for Spleen and Stomach Qi stagnation, chest and diaphragm fullness, epigastric pain, belching, and vomiting. Commonly combined with Citrus Peel (Chen Pi), Pinellia (Ban Xia), etc., as in Su Ju Tang (Perilla-Citrus Decoction). For Qi stagnation with cold signs, combined with fresh ginger; for long-term stagnation transforming into heat, assisted with Coptis (Huang Lian); for food accumulation and Qi stagnation, combined with Hawthorn (Shan Zha), Raphanus (Lai Fu Zi), etc.
2. Used for pregnancy-related morning sickness and restless fetus; can be combined with Citrus Peel, Amomum (Sha Ren), Pinellia, fresh ginger, and others.
Additionally, this herb has blood harmonizing effects and can be used for Qi and blood disorder-induced hemoptysis and hematemesis, often combined with Imperata cylindrica flower (Bai Mao Hua), as in Mao Su Tang (Imperata-Perilla Decoction). 1. Chemical constituents: Perilla Stem contains perillaketone, isoegomaketone, egomaketone, perillene, ethyl linolenate, linolenic acid, and β-sitosterol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Perilla Stem injection exhibits progestogenic activity, promoting growth of uterine endometrial glands. Interferon inducers extracted from leaves and stems of a related plant, Hui Hui Su (Perilla frutescens var. acuta), have demonstrated interferon-inducing effects in tests on rabbits and suspensions of rabbit spleen, bone marrow, and lymph node cells.
