[Overview] This herb is also known as Iron Fan Leaf and Silkworm Leaf. It is the leaf of Morus alba L., a plant of the Moraceae family. It is produced in most parts of China, mainly in Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Sichuan, and Hunan provinces. Harvested after the first frost in October to November, the leaves are cleaned of fine twigs and impurities, then sun-dried.

[Properties] Bitter and sweet in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Liver meridians.

[Actions] Disperses wind-heat, clears the Lung and moistens dryness, clears the Liver and brightens the eyes, cools the blood and stops bleeding.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-heat external contraction or early-stage warm febrile disease with pathogen in the defensive level, symptoms include fever, headache, sweating with aversion to wind, cough, and sore throat. Commonly combined with Chrysanthemum flower, Mint, Platycodon root, Forsythia fruit, as in the formula Sang Ju Yin (Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum Decoction).
2. Used for dry-heat cough with sticky sputum that is difficult to expectorate, or sputum with blood, dry throat and thirst. For dry-heat injuring the Lung with cough and scanty sputum, dry mouth and throat, often combined with Apricot kernel, Fritillaria, Glehnia root, as in Sang Xing Tang (Mulberry Leaf and Apricot Kernel Decoction). For dry-heat transforming into fire with fever, irritability, thirst, and dry cough without sputum, combined with Gypsum fibrosum, Ophiopogon root, Loquat leaf, as in Qing Zao Jiu Fei Tang (Clear Dryness and Rescue the Lung Decoction).
3. Used for red, swollen, painful eyes, blurred vision, tearing when exposed to wind, headache, and dizziness. For wind-heat attacking upward or Liver fire flaring causing red, painful eyes with tearing, can be used alone as an eye wash or combined with Chrysanthemum flower, Cicada slough, Prunella spike. For Liver yang rising with headache and dizziness, combined with Chrysanthemum flower, Abalone shell, White peony root. For Liver yin deficiency causing blurred vision, combined with black sesame, as in Sang Ma Wan (Mulberry and Sesame Pill).
4. Used for bleeding due to blood heat such as coughing blood, vomiting blood, or nosebleed. Can be used alone as a lightly roasted powder, as in Du Sheng San, or combined with Rehmannia root.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, decocted water for washing.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cough due to wind-cold.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Mulberry leaf contains steroidal and triterpenoid compounds, flavonoids and their glycosides, coumarin and its glycosides, volatile oils, amino acids and small peptides, alkaloids, organic acids and their compounds.
2. Pharmacological effects: Mulberry leaf and ecdysterone show hypoglycemic effects in experimental diabetic rats and hyperglycemic mice; fresh mulberry leaf decoction exhibits strong antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus, beta-hemolytic streptococcus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, and Bacillus anthracis; ecdysterone stimulates dermal cell division, promotes new epidermis formation, and induces insect molting; in humans, it promotes protein synthesis, eliminates cholesterol, and lowers blood lipids.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Chyluria: 25% mulberry leaf oral liquid, 200 ml per dose, three times daily, one month per course. Among 46 cases treated for six courses, 38 cured, 5 improved, 3 ineffective; total effective rate 93.48%. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1991, 10(5):20]
2) Psoriasis: 10% mulberry leaf injection 4 ml intramuscularly, twice daily, 7 days per course. Among 31 cases, 25 cured, 4 improved, 2 ineffective; total effective rate 94%. [Chinese Rural Medicine, 1983, (3):24]
3) Photophthalmia: mulberry leaf 20 g, wild chrysanthemum 15 g, honeysuckle 30 g prepared as eye drops, 1 drop each time, 2–3 times daily, severe cases every 30 minutes. Among 310 cases, 260 markedly effective, 40 effective, 10 ineffective. [Shaanxi Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1992, 13(5):206]
4) Facial chloasma: mulberry leaf steamed and sterilized, dried for use. 15 g soaked in boiling water as tea daily for one month per course. Among 20 cases, all cured after one month. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1992, 27(9):432]
5) Chyluria: raw mulberry leaf tablets orally, 12 g daily in three doses, one month per course; after urine protein and fat tests turn negative, consolidate with 2–3 courses. 6) Pediatric chemotherapy local pain: fresh mulberry leaf 100 g washed and dried, mixed with 20 g brown sugar, mashed evenly and applied to painful area. Among 30 cases, 20 markedly effective (66.67%), 9 effective (30%), total effective rate 96.67%. [Practical Nursing Journal, 2002, 18(5):54]
