[Overview] This herb is also known as horsetail grass, joint grass, and heartless grass. It is the aerial part of Equisetum hiemale L. from the Equisetaceae family. It is mainly produced in Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shaanxi, and Hubei provinces. Harvested in summer and autumn, impurities are removed, then it is sun-dried or shade-dried.
[Properties] Taste: sweet and bitter; nature: neutral. Enters the Lung and Liver meridians.
[Actions] Disperses wind-heat, reduces eye opacity, stops bleeding.
[Applications]
1. Used for wind-heat red eyes, tearing when exposed to wind, and eye opacity. Commonly combined with Cicadae Periostracum, Scutellaria baicalensis, Chrysanthemum flower, etc. For eye opacity with concurrent Liver deficiency, combined with Euryale seed, Abalone shell, and pig liver cooked together; the soup is drunk and pig liver eaten. For Liver heat red eyes, combined with Cassia seed and Prunella spike. When combined with Atractylodes, it can treat photophobia and excessive tearing.
2. Used for various bleeding syndromes, especially lower body bleeding. For intestinal wind bleeding or hemorrhoidal bleeding, often combined with Sophora japonica fruit, Citrus aurantium peel, and processed ginger. For female metrorrhagia, can be combined with Angelica sinensis, Ligusticum chuanxiong, and Vaccaria seed.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and sprinkled.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of Qi deficiency.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Herb Equisetum Hiemalis contains equisetine, dimethyl sulfone, thymine, ferulic acid, and small amounts of caffeic acid, vanillin, and p-hydroxybenzyl alcohol. It also contains phosphates and large amounts of formaldehyde, silicates, tannins, saponins, etc. Additionally, it contains flavonoids, mainly shikimic acid derivatives, quercetin, and their glycosides.
2. Pharmacological effects: Alcohol extracts of Equisetum have antihypertensive effects; aqueous decoctions prevent experimental hyperlipidemia; contained sodium ferulate inhibits platelet aggregation; caffeic acid has hemostatic effects, shortens coagulation and bleeding times, and exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial and antiviral activities. The herb also has sedative and anticonvulsant effects; ether extracts show antimalarial activity.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Flat warts and flat papules: Use 30 g each of Herb Equisetum Hiemalis and Cyperus rotundus, soak in 600 ml water for 30 minutes, then decoct. When the decoction cools slightly, apply warm to affected areas by patting for 20 minutes, then air dry naturally. Each dose can be used continuously for 5 days as one course. Re-boil the decoction before next use. A total of 18 cases were treated with good results. [Chinese Folk Therapy, 2001,(3):39]
2) Condyloma acuminatum: Take 200 g of Herb Equisetum Hiemalis, decoct in water, filter and concentrate to a paste. Soak gauze strips in the decoction for 2 days, then apply to lesions. Change gauze at least 3 times daily; 3–4 weeks is one course. 24 cases treated, 10 combined with surgical excision or electrocautery. Except for 2 cases who did not persist with topical treatment, all others were cured within 12–20 days. [Journal of Chinese Integrative Medicine, 1993,13(6):339]
3) Oral ulcers: Use 50 g fresh Herb Equisetum Hiemalis (20 g if dry, reduced dose for children), add 200 ml water, steam in a double boiler for 20 minutes, strain and drink the juice with rock sugar in two doses. 73 cases treated: 67 cured after 2–3 doses, 4 cured after 5 doses, 2 ineffective.
