[Overview] This herb is also known as Water Duckweed, Water Flower, Floating Duckweed Herb, and Duckweed Seed Herb. It is the whole herb of Spirodela polyrrhiza (L.) Schleid., a plant of the family Lemnaceae. It is found throughout the country, mainly produced in Hubei, Fujian, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and other regions. Harvested from June to September, it is collected, impurities removed, washed clean, and sun-dried.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Bladder meridians.

[Actions] Disperses wind-heat, promotes rash eruption, and facilitates urination.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-heat exterior syndrome with fever and absence of sweating; often combined with Mint (Bohe), Forsythia (Lianqiao), Schizonepeta (Jingjie), and others.
2. Used for incomplete or delayed measles eruption and pruritic urticaria. For measles that are slow to erupt or rashes that do not fully surface, it can be decocted with Mint, Cicada Slough (Chanti), Kudzu Root (Gegen), Burdock Seed (Niubangzi), and Honeysuckle (Yinhua). For pruritic urticaria, it is commonly combined with Schizonepeta, Saposhnikovia (Fangfeng), Rehmannia (Shengdi), Cicada Slough, and Kochia Seed (Difuzi).
3. Used for edema and difficult urination. This herb is especially suitable for wind-water syndrome, characterized by generalized edema, wheezing and coughing without sweating, and difficult urination; often combined with Ephedra (Mahuang), Forsythia, and Winter Melon Peel (Dongguapi). For edema without exterior syndrome, it can be combined with Poria (Fuling), Plantain Seed (Cheqianzi), and Alisma (Zexie). It is currently often used clinically to treat acute and chronic nephritis.
Additionally, it can be used for persistent nosebleed by grinding the single herb into powder and insufflating into the nose; for tinea versicolor and vitiligo, it can be decocted for bathing.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; fresh herb 15–30 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, decocted for fumigation and washing; or ground powder mixed; or fresh herb pounded and applied topically.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of exterior deficiency with spontaneous sweating.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb of purple duckweed contains luteolin, luteolin 7-glucoside, vitexin, β-carotene, lutein, as well as fatty acids and proteins; floating duckweed whole herb contains trans-1,3-pentadiene, dihydrotomatine, stigmasterol, phytosterols, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoctions or infusions of floating duckweed have a mild antipyretic effect on vaccine-induced fever in rabbits; exhibit significant cardiotonic effects on quinine-induced weakened frog hearts; have vasoconstrictive and blood pressure elevating effects; and show inhibitory effects on orphan viruses in vitro.
