[Overview] This herb is also known as Manjing Fruit, Jingzi, Wanjingzi, and Manqingzi. It is the mature fruit of plants from the Verbenaceae family: Vitertrifolia L. var. simplicifolia Cham. (Single-leaf Manjing) or Vitex trifolia L. (Manjing). Single-leaf Manjingzi is mainly produced in Shandong, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces, while Manjingzi is mainly produced in Hainan, Guangxi, and Yunnan provinces. The fruits are harvested simultaneously in autumn when mature, impurities are removed, and then dried in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver, Stomach, and Bladder meridians.

[Actions] Disperses wind-heat and clears the head and eyes.

[Applications] 1. Used for wind-heat headache and swollen painful gums. For external wind-heat with headache, dizziness, fever, and aversion to wind, it is often combined with Mulberry Leaf (Sangye), Chrysanthemum (Juhua), Mint (Bohe), and Schizonepeta (Jingjie). For wind-heat attacking upward causing swollen painful gums, it can be combined with Gypsum (Shigao) and Angelica Dahurica (Baizhi). This herb can also be used for headache due to qi deficiency and blood weakness with failure of clear yang to ascend, often combined with Ginseng (Renshen), Astragalus (Huangqi), Cimicifuga (Shengma), and Bupleurum (Chaihu).

2. Used for red, swollen, painful eyes with photophobia and excessive tearing, and corneal opacity causing blindness. 3. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction syndrome with limb spasm and rigidity, often combined with Notopterygium (Qianghuo), Saposhnikovia (Fangfeng), and Ligusticum (Gaoben), as in the formula Qianghuo Shengshi Tang.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g; can be soaked in alcohol or used in pills and powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically.

[Cautions] This herb has an ascending dispersing nature; caution is advised in cases of headache and dizziness due to blood deficiency with fire, and in those with weak stomach qi.

[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: The single herb Manjing fruit contains volatile oils, mainly camphene and pinene. It also contains trace amounts of alkaloids, vitamin A, and Vitex flavonoids. Manjing fruit contains small amounts of vitexin glycosides and fixed oils, whose main components are myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, as well as γ-tocopherol and β-sitosterol.

Pharmacological effects: Decoctions of Manjingzi inhibit Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus species, Micrococcus luteus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It also inhibits enterovirus. Both aqueous decoctions and alcohol extracts exhibit significant analgesic effects. Methanol extracts inhibit capillary permeability. Aqueous decoctions have expectorant and antiasthmatic effects. Extracts significantly prolong the coagulation time of human fibrinogen induced by bovine thrombin, indicating strong anticoagulant activity. Hot water extracts inhibit cervical cancer cells. Additionally, it has antihypertensive effects.
