[Overview] This herb is also known as Fangmu, Mubihua, Mao Xinyi, Jiangpuhua. It is the flower bud of plants in the Magnoliaceae family: Magnolia biondii Pamp., Magnolia denudata Desr., or Magnolia sprengeri Pamp. Magnolia biondii is mainly produced in Henan, Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Hubei provinces; Magnolia denudata is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Anhui, and Jiangxi; Magnolia sprengeri is mainly produced in Sichuan, Hubei, and Jiangxi. The flower buds are harvested in late winter to early spring before blooming, with stems and impurities removed, then dried in the shade.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Disperses wind-cold, unblocks nasal passages.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-cold common cold with aversion to cold, fever, headache, and nasal congestion; often combined with Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia), etc. For wind-heat common cold with nasal congestion and headache, it can be combined with Bohe (Mint), Jinyinhua (Lonicera), and Juhua (Chrysanthemum).
2. Used for nasal obstruction and nasal discharge due to rhinitis. If the pattern is wind-cold with clear nasal discharge and persistent sneezing, it is often combined with Xixin (Asarum), Baizhi (Angelica dahurica), Fangfeng, Chuanxiong (Ligusticum), etc., as in the formula Xinyi San. If the pattern is wind-heat with yellow, foul-smelling nasal discharge, it can be combined with Cang Erzi (Xanthium), Bohe, Baizhi, Shigao (Gypsum), Huangqin (Scutellaria). For prolonged illness with purulent, foul-smelling nasal discharge and loss of smell, indicating gallbladder heat invading upward, it can be combined with Chaihu (Bupleurum), Shanzhi (Gardenia), Beimu (Fritillaria), Xuanshen (Scrophularia), as in the formula Qu Yuan Tang. If there is Lung and Stomach heat causing nasal sores, it can be combined with Huangqin, Lianqiao (Forsythia), Yejuhua (Wild Chrysanthemum). In recent years, Xinyi has been made into ointments, oils, and emulsions, soaked on cotton strips and inserted into the nose to treat allergic rhinitis, acute rhinitis, or hypertrophic rhinitis.
Additionally, this herb can be used to treat nasal polyps, both internally and externally.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or included in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and inserted into the nose or distilled with water and dropped into the nose.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of yin deficiency with fire excess.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Magnolia biondii flower buds contain volatile oils, with main components including β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, and camphor, as well as lignin components such as methyl ether of pinosylvin, magnolin, and tulipalin B methyl ether; Magnolia denudata flower buds and flowers contain volatile oils mainly composed of 1,8-cineole, α- and β-pinene, camphene, sabinene, β-linalool, limonene, and magnolol; Magnolia sprengeri flower buds’ volatile oil main components include bornyl acetate, trans-caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, and β-eudesmol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Aromatic water or emulsion made from Xinyi volatile oil, when applied to local mucosa, causes protein precipitation and contraction on the mucosal surface, reducing secretion or exudate, and dilates microvessels to improve local blood circulation, thereby promoting absorption and resolution of secretions; Xinyi extract or decoction has local infiltrative anesthetic effects; it has good anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects; water or alcohol extracts show antihypertensive effects in various animals; decoctions and fluid extracts have significant uterine stimulant effects, especially on pregnant uterus; it has certain anti-platelet aggregation and anticoagulant effects; it inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Group B Streptococcus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Shigella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli; it also inhibits various pathogenic skin fungi.
3. Clinical reports: Allergic rhinitis—using 3 g of Magnolia flower bud; for wind-cold predominant lung invasion add 10 g of Huoxiang (Agastache); for wind-heat predominant congestion add 10 g of Huaihua (Sophora flower). Brewed with boiling water and taken frequently, 1–2 doses daily. In a treatment of 120 cases, 67 were cured, 29 markedly effective, 18 improved, and 6 ineffective. [Zhongyao Tongbao, 1985, 10(5):45]
