[Overview] This herb is also known as Jingye. It is the leaf of Vitex negundo L. var. cannabifolia (Sieb. et Zucc.) Hand. Mazz., a plant of the Verbenaceae family. It is produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guangxi, Guizhou, and other regions. The leaves are harvested in summer and autumn when they are luxuriant, removing stems and branches, and used fresh or dried.

[Properties] Slightly bitter and pungent in taste, with a neutral nature.

[Actions] Dispel wind and release the exterior, stop cough and relieve asthma, eliminate dampness and stop itching, detoxify.

[Applications]
1. Used for common cold, cough, and asthma. For wind-cold common cold, it can be used together with Perilla leaf (Zisuye); for cough and asthma, it is often combined with apricot kernel (Xingren), Suzi, and others. Currently used clinically for chronic bronchitis with good effect.
2. Used for epigastric and abdominal pain, damp-heat vomiting and diarrhea, decocted in water for oral administration. For damp-heat vomiting and diarrhea, it can be combined with Centella asiatica (Jixuecao).
3. Used for wind rash itching, tinea pedis, athlete’s foot swelling, mastitis, snake and insect bites, often pounded and applied topically or decocted water used for washing affected areas. For athlete’s foot swelling, it can also be combined with loofah fiber, Perilla leaf, Acorus calamus, and mugwort leaf.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g (30–60 g fresh); or pounded juice. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied or decocted water for fumigation and washing.

Chemical constituents: Folium Viticis Negundo contains volatile oil, whose main component is β-caryophyllene, followed by aromadendrene; it also contains α-thujene, α- and β-pinene, camphene, α-selinene, paracoumaric acid, limonene, 1,8-cineole, etc. Additionally, it contains vitex lactone, vitexin glycoside, isovitexin, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: The volatile oil of Folium Viticis Negundo has a significant expectorant effect, can inhibit the cough center to exert an antitussive effect, has antihistamine effects, can relieve bronchial smooth muscle spasm to relieve asthma; the oil emulsion significantly and persistently lowers blood pressure in rabbits; the oil can enhance macrophage phagocytic ability and promote albumin synthesis and regulate immunoglobulins; oral administration of the oil has certain sedative and hypnotic effects; water decoction of stems and leaves shows significant antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus anthracis, and inhibitory effects on Escherichia coli, Streptococcus beta-hemolyticus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Shigella.

Attached medicine: Mujing oil (Mujingyou) is the volatile oil obtained by steam distillation of Folium Viticis Negundo. Functions: expectorant, antitussive, and antiasthmatic. Used for chronic bronchitis. Oral dose: 20–40 ml each time, three times daily.
