[Overview] This herb is also known as Xiangchi, Danchi, and Soybean Douchi. It is a fermented processed product made from the mature seeds of Glycine max (L.) Merr., a leguminous plant. It is produced in most regions of China, mainly in the northeast. It is made by fermenting black soybeans with decoctions of mulberry leaves and Artemisia annua.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, cool in nature. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Releases the exterior, disperses constraint, relieves vexation.

[Applications]
1. Used for external contracted disorders regardless of wind-cold or wind-heat. For wind-heat exterior syndromes, it can be combined with Lonicera japonica (honeysuckle), Forsythia suspensa, Mentha haplocalyx, etc., as in the formula Yin Qiao San (银翘散). For wind-cold exterior syndromes, it is often used with scallion white, as in Cong Chi Tang (葱豉汤).
2. Used for pathogenic heat constraint causing chest vexation and restlessness, even insomnia due to heart vexation; often combined with Gardenia jasminoides, as in Zhi Zi Chi Tang (栀子豉汤).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 6–12 g; or included in pill preparations. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically; or stir-fried until charred, ground into powder and applied as a topical dressing.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of stomach deficiency with nausea.
