[Overview] This herb is also known as Tu Danggui, Ye Danggui, and Shui Qianhu. It is the root of plants from the Apiaceae family: Peucedanum praeruptorum Dunn (white-flowered Qianhu) or Peucedanum decursivum Maxim. (purple-flowered Qianhu). The former is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Hunan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Jiangxi, and Fujian provinces; the latter is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Hunan, and Fujian. The roots are harvested in autumn and winter after the plants wither, with stems, leaves, fibrous roots, and soil removed, then dried in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Lung meridian.

[Actions] Disperses wind-heat, descends Qi, and transforms phlegm.

[Applications]
1. Used for externally contracted wind-heat with fever, headache, cough with abundant phlegm; often combined with herbs such as Bo He (Mentha), Niu Bang Zi (Arctium), Jie Geng (Platycodon). When combined with Zi Su (Perilla) and Xing Ren (Apricot kernel), it can also treat externally contracted wind-cold cough.
2. Used for heat-phlegm obstructing the lungs, cough and asthma with thick phlegm, chest fullness and oppression; often combined with Xing Ren, Bei Mu (Fritillaria), Sang Bai Pi (Morus bark), as in the formula Qianhu San. When used together with Bai Qian (Cynanchum), it can also treat cold and damp phlegm. If turbid phlegm obstructs the lungs and stomach causing cough, chest fullness, vomiting, and nausea, it can be combined with Xing Ren, Chen Pi (Citrus peel), Ban Xia (Pinellia).
Additionally, this herb combined with Hu Huang Lian (Picrorhiza), Wu Mei (Mume), and Zhu Ji Sui (Pig spinal marrow) can treat phlegm-heat injuring yin and bone steaming tidal fever.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders.

[Cautions] Use with caution in patients with yin-deficiency cough or cold-phlegm cough.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: White-flowered Qianhu contains volatile oils and peucedanins A, B, C, D, and E, as well as trace amounts of peucedanoside and mannitol. Purple-flowered Qianhu contains volatile oils, peucedanoside, peucedanoside aglycone, peucedanin, and sesquiterpene lactones. The main components of the volatile oil responsible for expectorant effects are anisole ethers and limonene.
2. Pharmacological effects: Qianhu increases coronary artery flow, lowers aortic blood pressure, reduces the maximum rate of left ventricular pressure rise, myocardial oxygen consumption, and peripheral vascular resistance. The aqueous-alcohol extract of Qianhu shows significant preventive and therapeutic effects on barium chloride-induced arrhythmia. Purple-flowered Qianhu glycosides and their aglycones significantly antagonize ADP-induced primary and secondary platelet aggregation. Decoctions of purple-flowered Qianhu have strong expectorant effects. The contained sesquiterpene lactones can inhibit the growth of nasopharyngeal carcinoma KB cells.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Bacterial dysentery: powdered Qianhu, 6 g orally three times daily. Over 20 cases treated with significant efficacy. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1981, 16(8):358] (2) Finger carbuncles: Qianhu crushed and soaked in 75% ethanol (5 days in winter, 3 days in summer). The affected area disinfected and dressed with Qianhu preparation about 0.5 cm thick, changed once daily or twice daily if pus is abundant. 38 cases treated, all cured.
