[Overview] This herb is also known as Hyacinth Bean, Small Hyacinth Bean, Emei Bean, and Mei Bean. It is the mature seed of the leguminous plant Dolichos lablab L. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Henan, Anhui, and other regions. In autumn, when the seeds mature, the pods are harvested, seeds are shelled, dried in the sun, and impurities are removed.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, slightly warm in nature. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Strengthens the spleen and transforms dampness; harmonizes the middle burner and relieves summer heat.

[Applications]
1. Used for spleen and stomach deficiency with symptoms such as poor appetite, abdominal distension, loose stools, undigested food in stools, bland taste in the mouth, nausea, and vomiting. Commonly combined with Poria (Fu Ling), Atractylodes (Bai Zhu), and Chinese Yam (Shan Yao), as in the formula Shen Ling Bai Zhu San. For pediatric indigestion and simple diarrhea with anorexia, abdominal distension, and clear or foul-smelling diarrhea, often combined with Atractylodes (Bai Zhu), Amomum (Sha Ren), and Chicken Gizzard Membrane (Ji Nei Jin).
2. Used for women with spleen deficiency and excessive dampness causing continuous leukorrhea, accompanied by sallow complexion, fatigue, and pale white tongue without odor. Used alone as a powder taken with water or combined with Atractylodes (Bai Zhu), Chinese Yam (Shan Yao), and Gorgon Fruit (Qian Shi).
3. Used for summer damp-heat injury causing vomiting and diarrhea. Used alone or combined with Agastache (Huo Xiang), Lotus Leaf (He Ye), and Magnolia Bark (Hou Po), as in the formula Xiang Ru Yin. If dysentery presents with red and white stools, burning sensation at the anus, and tenesmus, combined with Coptis (Huang Lian), Kudzu Root (Ge Gen), and Cortex Qin Pi.
Additionally, this herb can be used for prolonged summer fever in children, combined with Bamboo Leaf (Zhu Ye), Gypsum (Shi Gao), Artemisia Annua (Qing Hao), or cooked with mung beans and glutinous rice as a porridge for long-term consumption. When used with Trichosanthes Root (Tian Hua Fen), it can also treat thirst due to spleen and stomach heat accumulation.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g. The dried herb can be ground into powder and used in pills or powders, 6–10 g. Stir-fried hyacinth bean seed has a stronger effect in strengthening the spleen and stopping diarrhea, mainly used for spleen deficiency diarrhea and increased leukorrhea; the raw herb is more effective in transforming dampness and relieving summer heat, mainly used for mild spleen deficiency with internal damp-heat.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The seeds contain oils (palmitic acid, linoleic acid, trans-oleic acid, oleic acid, stearic acid, etc.), trigonelline, amino acids, vitamins B1 and C, carotene, plant lectins, plant calcium and magnesium, stachyose, maltose, and raffinose.
2. Pharmacological effects: The plant lectin A in hyacinth bean is water-insoluble and lacks anti-trypsin activity; when mixed in food and fed to rats, it inhibits growth and can cause localized liver necrosis; heating greatly reduces its toxicity. Lectin B is water-soluble and has anti-trypsin activity. Cold saline extracts promote the formation of E. rosea flower buds; water decoctions inhibit dysentery bacillus; water extracts have antiviral effects and detoxify vomiting and diarrhea caused by food poisoning. Additionally, it enhances cellular immune function and has anti-alcohol intoxication effects.
3. Clinical reports: Infantile diarrhea—using 15 g each of white hyacinth bean seed and Coix seed (Yi Yi Ren), and 10 g of chicken gizzard membrane (Ji Nei Jin). All are finely powdered, stir-fried until slightly yellow, cooked with millet into a thin porridge, sweetened with sugar, and taken in three doses. In a total of 60 cases treated, most were cured within 2–3 doses. [Hebei Medical Journal, 1982, (1):11]
