[Overview] This herb is also known as Sha Shen, Bai Sha Shen, Pao Sha Shen, and Tu Ren Shen. It is the root of plants from the Campanulaceae family: Adenophora tetraphylla (Thunb.) Fisch. or Adenophora stricta Miq. Adenophora tetraphylla is mainly produced in Guizhou, Henan, Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, and Jiangsu; Adenophora stricta is mainly produced in Anhui, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. The roots are harvested in spring and autumn, with stems, leaves, and fibrous roots removed. The roots are washed to remove soil, scraped with bamboo strips to remove coarse bark while fresh, then washed and dried in the sun.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Nourishes Yin and clears heat, moistens the lungs and transforms phlegm, benefits the stomach and generates fluids.

[Applications]
1. Used for lung Yin deficiency with dryness, dry cough with little phlegm, chronic cough with blood-streaked sputum, dry throat and hoarseness; especially suitable for Yin deficiency with phlegm. For chronic Yin deficiency cough with scanty sticky sputum, often combined with Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di), Ophiopogonis Radix (Mai Dong), and Fritillariae Bulbus (Bei Mu). For dryness injuring lung Yin with dry cough and little sputum, dry mouth and throat, combined with Ophiopogonis Radix (Mai Dong) and Trichosanthes Radix (Tian Hua Fen), as in Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang. For pulmonary tuberculosis cough with blood in sputum, often combined with Asini Corii Colla (E Jiao), Stemonae Radix (Bai Bu), and Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Chuan Bei), as in Yue Hua Wan; for chronic cough with hoarseness and sore throat, combined with Scrophulariae Radix (Xuan Shen) and Terminaliae Chebulae Fructus (He Zi).
2. Used for stomach Yin deficiency with dry mouth and throat, constipation, red tongue with little coating; often combined with Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di) and Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (Yu Zhu), as in Yi Wei Tang. If fluid injury is severe with crimson tongue and little fluid, combined with fresh Rehmanniae Radix and fresh Dendrobii Caulis (Shi Hu). Also used in late-stage febrile diseases with Qi and Yin deficiency and lingering heat.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; fresh herb 15–30 g; or used in pills and powders.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in wind-cold cough. Antagonistic to Veratrum (Li Lu).

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Radix Adenophorae contains β-sitosterol, β-sitosterol β-D-glucoside, taraxerone, and octacosanoic acid; also contains starch, polysaccharides, trace elements such as calcium and lead.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of Radix Adenophorae can enhance cellular and nonspecific immunity, inhibit humoral immunity, regulate immune balance, and increase lymphocyte transformation rate; its extract has a significant cardiotonic effect on isolated toad hearts; decoction has expectorant effects in rabbits lasting over 4 hours, though weaker than Aster tataricus; aqueous extract shows antifungal activity against Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum gypseum.
3. Clinical reports: For corns, Radix Adenophorae and Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix (Dan Shen) 50 g each, decocted once daily. In 27 cases treated, 21 cured, 4 effective, 2 ineffective, with an efficacy rate of 92.6%. [Chinese Patent Medicine Research, 1986, (7):47]
