[Overview] This product is also known as Yuanmingfen, Bailongfen, Fenghua Xiao. It is a white powder obtained by weathering and drying Thenardite, an anhydrous sodium sulfate mineral of the mirabilite group. It is mainly produced in Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shanxi, and other regions. In dry and cold winter weather, purified mirabilite is placed in bamboo trays or wrapped in paper and exposed to ventilated dry places to undergo weathering, causing moisture to evaporate and resulting in the white powder.

[Properties] Bitter and salty in taste, cold in nature. Enters the stomach and large intestine meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and promotes bowel movements, moistens dryness and softens hardness, reduces swelling and dissipates nodules.

[Applications]
1. Used for excess heat accumulation and constipation with dry stools or heat accumulation with discharge. Commonly combined with Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) as in formulas such as Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang (调胃承气汤). If accompanied by abdominal distension and fullness, add Zhi Shi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) and Hou Po (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis), as in Da Cheng Qi Tang (大承气汤). For food accumulation in the stomach with acid regurgitation and belching, it can be combined with Da Huang, Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Shan Zha (Fructus Crataegi), etc.
2. Used for red swollen painful eyes, mouth ulcers, and sore throat, as well as nosebleeds. For red swollen painful eyes, it can be mixed with human breast milk and applied externally; for sore throat and mouth ulcers, it is often ground with Bing Pian (Borneol) and Peng Sha (Borax) into powder and blown onto the affected area, as in Bing Peng San (冰硼散); for heat-induced nosebleeds, it can be taken orally before sleep.
3. Used for carbuncles and toxic swellings. For early-stage carbuncles with redness, swelling, heat, and pain but no pus, it can be applied wrapped in gauze; for anal abscesses, fissures, and fistulas, decoctions can be used for sitz baths and fumigation.
Additionally, Xuanmingfen has blood-breaking and menstruation-promoting effects. Combined with Da Huang and Tao Ren (Semen Persicae), it can treat female blood stasis with amenorrhea and retained lochia postpartum; combined with Da Huang, Jin Qian Cao (Lysimachiae Herba), Xuan Hu Suo (Rhizoma Corydalis), Yu Jin (Radix Curcumae), Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae), and Zhi Qiao (Fructus Aurantii), it can treat cholelithiasis.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: Xuanmingfen is generally not decocted but taken with medicinal juice or boiled water, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, dissolved in water for topical application or ground finely and blown onto the throat.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in patients with spleen and stomach deficiency cold, absence of real heat in the gastrointestinal tract, and in pregnant women.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include anhydrous sodium sulfate (Na2SO4). Impurities include calcium sulfate, potassium sulfate, iron sulfate, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Xuanmingfen has a significant inhibitory effect on bile salt-promoted carcinogenesis. The mechanism may involve acidifying the intestinal environment, inhibiting intestinal bacterial 7α-decarboxylase activity, reducing deoxycholic acid (DCA) and free DNA content, lowering DNA synthesis in intestinal epithelial cells, reducing S-phase cells, and decreasing the body’s sensitivity to carcinogens such as bile salts.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Acute mastitis: Xuanmingfen 500–1000 g packed in gauze bags for external application 2–3 times daily, combined with oral Ma Dan San. A total of 99 cases treated with an overall effective rate of 94%. [Jiangsu Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1987, 8(11):10]
2) Corneal opacity: 50 g Xuanmingfen soaked in 500 g edible vinegar in an earthenware pot, simmered over low heat until dry, then ground into powder for use. A small amount is sprinkled under the conjunctiva 2–3 times daily for 20 days per course. A total of 37 cases (46 eyes) treated with an effective rate of 94.23%. [Shaanxi Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1987, 8(8):348]
3) Acute urinary retention: 50 g Xuanmingfen applied to the navel with a small amount of warm water to keep moist; after drying, water is added again, applied for 1–3 hours. A total of 27 cases treated, 22 urinated within 3 hours, 5 cases ineffective. [Journal of Practical Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1996, (1):28]
