[Overview] This herb is also known as Red Date, Dried Date, and Beautiful Date. It is the mature fruit of Ziziphus jujuba Mill., a plant of the Rhamnaceae family. It is widely cultivated throughout China. The fruit is harvested in autumn when ripe, sun-dried, and used raw.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies Qi and strengthens the Spleen, nourishes the blood and calms the spirit, harmonizes the Ying and Wei (nutritive and defensive Qi), moderates the harsh properties of other herbs.
[Applications]
1. Used for Spleen and Stomach deficiency with symptoms of fatigue, lack of strength, poor appetite, and loose stools. Can be used as a dietary therapy herb for regular consumption. Often combined with Codonopsis, Atractylodes, and Poria, as in the formula Shenling Baizhu San. For Spleen deficiency with cold-dampness, combined with Atractylodes, Dried Ginger, and Chicken Gizzard Membrane. For disharmony of the Spleen and Stomach with dry heaves, nausea, abdominal distension, and poor appetite, often used with Fresh Ginger and Licorice, as in Dazao Tang.
2. Used for various signs of Qi and blood deficiency. For Qi deficiency, often combined with Ginseng; for blood deficiency, added to formulas containing Angelica Sinensis and White Peony. For blood and Qi deficiency with sallow complexion, emaciation, and fatigue, combined with Ginseng, Astragalus, Rehmannia, and Angelica Sinensis. For women with blood deficiency and restlessness, emotional instability, and tendency to cry, often combined with Licorice and Wheat, as in Ganmai Dazao Tang.
3. Used for exterior syndrome with disharmony of Ying and Wei, headache, fever, sweating, and aversion to wind. Combined with Fresh Ginger to assist Cinnamon Twig and White Peony in harmonizing Ying and Wei, as in Guizhi Tang.
4. Used in formulas containing harsh or toxic herbs. Jujube fruit moderates the properties or reduces toxicity and side effects of some strong herbs, such as in Shizao Tang and Tingli Dazao Xie Fei Tang. It alleviates the toxicity of herbs like Euphorbia, Daphne, and Aconite, and the harshness of Descurainia seeds, while its sweetness protects and nourishes the Stomach Qi to prevent damage to the upright Qi.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted, 6–15 g. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and sprinkled or decocted for washing.
[Cautions] Use with caution or avoid in cases of excessive dampness, phlegm accumulation, food stagnation, or parasitic infestation.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Jujube contains alkaloids, triterpenic acids, saponins, sugars, rutin, vitamin C, riboflavin, carotene, niacin, various amino acids, and 26 trace elements.
2. Pharmacological effects: Jujube has sedative and sleep-enhancing effects, hepatoprotective action, muscle strength enhancement, anti-tumor and anti-allergic effects, and can increase serum total protein and albumin.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Allergic purpura: 10 jujube fruits decocted and taken once daily. Five cases treated with all effective results. [Xin Zhong Yi, 1986,(6):26]
2) Psoriasis: 10 mature sun-dried (not steamed or boiled) jujubes and 3 Dan Shen tablets taken on an empty stomach once daily for one month per course. 107 cases treated with a total effective rate of 91%. [Clinical Dermatology Journal, 1988,(3):159]
3) Leukopenia: Oral administration of Shiwei Dazao Tang (Shiwei 30 g, Jujube 10 g), adjusted according to symptoms, treated 47 cases with all showing significant effect. [Hunan Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1992,1:8]
4) Leukopenia caused by radiotherapy and chemotherapy: Cotton root 60 g and Jujube 50 g decocted in 600 ml water to 300 ml, filtered for use. Preventive study showed WBC levels during radiotherapy and chemotherapy significantly higher than blank and positive control groups; therapeutic study showed WBC elevation significantly higher than positive control group.
