[Overview] This herb is also known as Daixingcao, Wenxingcao, Yixingcao, and Gujingzi. It is the flower of Eriocaulon buergerianum Koern., a plant of the Eriocaulaceae family, characterized by a flower head with a flower stalk. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Hubei provinces, with additional production in Anhui and Jiangxi. The largest yields come from Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Hubei. It is harvested in autumn by pulling out the flower heads along with the flower stalks, removing residual leaves and weeds, and drying in the sun.
[Properties] The taste is pungent and sweet; the nature is neutral. It enters the liver and stomach meridians.
[Actions] Disperses wind and clears heat; brightens the eyes and reduces visual obstructions.
[Applications] 1. Used for red, swollen, and painful eyes, photophobia with excessive tearing, eye cataracts, and night blindness. For red, swollen, painful eyes caused by wind-heat, photophobia, and tearing, it is often combined with Bai Jili (Tribulus terrestris), Mu Zei (Equisetum), and Mi Meng Hua (Bud of Buddleja). If wind-heat is severe with predominant liver fire, more intense pain, and difficulty opening red swollen eyelids, it can be combined with Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepeta spikes), Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum), Cao Jue Ming (Cassia seeds), and Long Dan Cao (Gentiana) in formulas such as Gujingcao Tang. For eye cataracts, it is decocted with Chan Yi (Cicada slough), Lu Dou Yi (Mung bean husk), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia), and Bai Jili. For night blindness, it can be cooked with sheep liver or combined with Cang Zhu (Atractylodes), Ye Ming Sha (Night shining sand).
2. Used for wind-heat headache, toothache, and nasal congestion. For wind-heat headache and toothache, it is commonly combined with Bo He (Mint), Ju Hua, and Niu Bang Zi (Arctium). For nasal congestion, it can be combined with Man Jing Zi (Vitex), Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica), and Xi Xin (Asarum), or powdered with Tong Lu (Copper green) and Xiao Shi (Stone powder) for nasal insufflation.
Additionally, this herb can treat wind rash itching by washing externally with decoction.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g. External use: appropriate amount, powdered for nasal insufflation or applied as a paste.
[Cautions] Not suitable for eye diseases due to yin deficiency and blood insufficiency. Avoid using iron utensils for decoction.
