[Overview] This herb is also known as Xuejianchou, Xuefengcao, and Pudijun. It is the whole herb of Euphorbia humifusa Wild. or Euphorbia maculata L., plants of the Euphorbiaceae family. It is distributed throughout most regions of China, especially abundant in the Yangtze River basin and southern provinces. The whole herb is harvested in summer and autumn, impurities are removed, then washed and sun-dried.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the liver and large intestine meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, cools the blood and stops bleeding.
[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat dysentery, painful urination with strangury, and jaundice. For dysentery, it is often decocted alone or combined with Coptis chinensis (Huanglian), Phellodendron amurense (Huangbai), Cortex Fraxini (Qinpi), or Polygonum hydropiper (Laliao Cao). For painful urination due to damp-heat descending, it can be combined with Plantago asiatica (Cheqian Cao) and Imperata cylindrica root (Baimaogen). For damp-heat jaundice, it is decocted with Artemisia capillaris (Yinchen) and Gardenia jasminoides (Shanzhi).
2. Used for various bleeding disorders, it can be decocted alone and taken with honey or as a concentrated paste. For bleeding due to blood heat such as hematemesis and epistaxis, it can be combined with Rehmannia glutinosa (Shengdi) and Moutan cortex (Danpi). For hematochezia, dysenteric bleeding, and hemorrhoidal bleeding, it can be combined with Sanguisorba officinalis (Diyu) and Sophora japonica flowers (Huaihua). For metrorrhagia, it can be combined with Pollen Typhae (Puhuang) and Rubia cordifolia (Qian Cao).
3. For abscesses, carbuncles, herpes zoster, poisonous snake bites, traumatic injuries, and external bleeding, the herb can be pounded into a paste or ground into powder for external application. When combined with Lysimachia congestiflora (Manjianghong) and applied externally, it can treat wind sores and scabies.
Additionally, for pediatric malnutrition (ganji), it can be steamed with chicken liver or pork liver, or combined with charred hawthorn (Jiao Shanzha), Massa fermentata (Shenqu), and malt (Maiya). For insufficient lactation, it can be stewed with pig’s trotters and yellow wine.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–20 g; or included in powders. External use: appropriate amount, fresh herb pounded and applied or dried herb powdered and applied.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of blood deficiency without stasis and in patients with spleen and stomach weakness.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains kaempferol, quercetin, methyl gallate, gallic acid, scopolamine, umbelliferone, and myo-inositol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Fresh juice and decoctions of Herb Euphorbia Humifusa exhibit inhibitory or bactericidal effects against Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococcus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Escherichia coli, and Shigella dysenteriae. Its aqueous extract strongly inhibits acute inflammation. The dry powder has significant hemostatic effects, markedly shortening blood coagulation time in mouse eyes.
3. Clinical reports:
(1) Bacterial dysentery: Fresh herb 150–200 g or dried 30–50 g decocted and taken in 3–4 divided doses per day as one dose. In 562 cases treated, 474 were cured, 50 improved, and 38 ineffective. [Shanghai Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1990,(3):23]
(2) Viral hepatitis: Daily dose of fresh herb 45 g (dried 20–25 g) with 50 g white sugar decocted and taken. In 47 acute hepatitis cases, total effective rate was 98%; in 18 chronic hepatitis cases, total effective rate was 83.3%. [Chinese Rural Medicine, 1987,18(3):12]
(3) Urinary system calculi: Fresh herb 100–200 g washed and pounded, placed in a large bowl covered with a smaller bowl, then 250–300 ml boiled rice wine poured in. After warming (covered for more than 10 minutes without removing the cover), taken 1–2 times daily for 7–10 days as one course. In 23 cases treated, 16 passed stones after one course, 7 did not, and 5 had complete symptom resolution. [New Chinese Medicine, 1984,(12):14]
