[Overview] This herb is also known as Caohai, Chouhao, Xianghao, and Haozi. It is the aerial part of Artemisia annua L., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is found throughout China. The aerial parts are harvested in autumn when the flowers are in full bloom, old stems are removed, then chopped and dried in the shade.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Liver and Gallbladder meridians.

[Actions] Clears deficiency heat, clears heat and relieves summer heat, arrests malaria.

[Applications]
1. Used for yin deficiency with vigorous fire, steaming bone disorder with tidal fever, heat in palms and soles; often combined with Yin Chai Hu, Di Gu Pi, Bie Jia, etc., as in Qing Gu San (Clear Bone Powder).
2. Used in late-stage warm diseases with yin fluid injury and heat lingering in the yin aspect, characterized by evening fever and morning coolness; can be combined with Sheng Di Huang, Zhi Mu, etc., as in Qing Hao Bie Jia Tang (Artemisia annua and Soft-shelled Turtle Shell Decoction).
3. Used for summer-heat external contraction with fever, thirst, with or without sweating, dizziness, and headache; often used fresh with green beans, watermelon rind, lotus leaf, etc. For summer-heat with dampness or damp-warmth syndrome presenting with fever, chest oppression, and limb fatigue, can be combined with Huo Xiang, Pei Lan, Hua Shi, etc. For warm disease with constrained Shao Yang, heat predominating over cold, bitter taste in mouth, nausea, can be combined with Huang Qin, Zhu Ru, etc., as in Hao Qin Qing Dan Tang (Artemisia and Scutellaria Clear Gallbladder Decoction).
4. Used for malaria; can be taken as fresh juice alone or included in antimalarial formulas. Artemisinin has been extracted from this herb and is used to treat malaria with significant antimalarial effects.
5. Used for damp-heat jaundice; can be combined with Yin Chen, Shan Zhi, etc. Additionally, externally this herb can treat skin itching, eczema, scabies, and other skin diseases.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g (for malaria up to 20–40 g); can also be taken as fresh juice or incorporated into pills and powders. When added to decoctions, add near the end and avoid prolonged boiling; fresh herb dosage is doubled. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically or powdered and mixed for application; or decoction used for washing.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency cold.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb of Artemisia annua contains volatile oils including artemisia ketone, levorotatory camphor, eucalyptol, acetate of artemisia alcohol ester, pinene, camphene, phellandrene, etc. It also contains artemisinin A, artemisinin B, scopoletin, artemetin, zerumbone, quercetin, artemisinic acid and its methyl ester, artemisitene, artemisin lactone, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Artemisinin in this herb has significant antimalarial activity, possibly by inhibiting the function of the plasmodium food vacuole membrane and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase, directly killing the plasmodium; artemisinin and derivatives have some efficacy against schistosomiasis in mice; artemisinin can slow heart rate, inhibit myocardial contractility, reduce coronary blood flow, lower blood pressure, and has some antiarrhythmic effects; it inhibits influenza virus, skin fungi, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella, and other pathogens; volatile oils have antitussive, expectorant, antiasthmatic, and antipyretic effects; chloroform extracts of water decoctions show significant choleretic effects in rats; four derivatives of artemisinic acid and artemisinin B (compounds A, B, C, D) inhibit mouse leukemia P388 cells, human liver cancer SMMC 7721 cells, and human gastric cancer SGC 7901 cells.
3. Clinical reports: 1. High fever: 200% Artemisia annua injection, 2–4 ml intramuscularly 1–2 times daily. Treated 126 cases of various fevers; 45 cases defervesced within 1 day, 41 cases within 1–2 days; total effective rate 68.25%. [Hubei Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1983,(2):11] 2. Discoid lupus erythematosus: Artemisia annua 500 g powdered and sifted through 40–60 mesh sieve, mixed with 1000–1500 ml honey to make pills, each pill 9 g, taken 3 times daily, 2 pills each time after meals with water. Treated 8 cases; rash relieved in 6 cases, effective in 2 cases. [Journal of Clinical Dermatology, 1987;(3):126] 3. Oral mucosal lichen planus: Artemisia annua powdered and mixed with honey into pills, 9 g each, 4–6 pills daily for 1–3 months, treated 10 cases; also oral artemether tablets (25 mg each), 75–100 mg daily for 1–6 months, treated 20 cases; results: marked effect in 14 cases, improvement in 11 cases, no effect in 5 cases. Nosebleed with heat: fresh Artemisia annua made into nasal drops (20 g herb per ml), 1–2 drops per nostril several times daily; treated 36 cases of epistaxis, 34 cured, 2 ineffective. [Sichuan Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985,(8):52]
