Processing method: Take impure natural mirabilite, dissolve it in water to precipitate impurities, filter, then heat and concentrate the filtrate. After cooling, crystals precipitate and are taken out to dry.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical composition: Mirabilite mainly contains sodium sulfate decahydrate (Na2SO4·10H2O), also contains impurities such as sodium chloride, calcium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate.
2. Pharmacology: The main component sodium sulfate, when taken orally, its sulfate ions are poorly absorbed by the intestinal mucosa, forming a hypertonic salt solution in the intestines that retains large amounts of water, dilates the intestines, causes mechanical stimulation, and promotes intestinal peristalsis, thus facilitating defecation. For infectious wounds, 10%–25% sodium sulfate applied externally uses its hyperosmotic effect to absorb water, producing anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Surgical infections: Mix Bing Pian and Mirabilite powder at a ratio of 1:10, apply to affected area, change every 2–3 days. Treated 230 cases, all cured. [Journal of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, 1984,(5):272]
2) Periappendiceal abscess: 100–200 g Mirabilite powder mixed with rice vinegar or 50% ethanol, placed in gauze bag, applied externally to swelling, keep moist by adding vinegar or ethanol as needed. Treated 213 cases with good efficacy. [Modern Chinese Medicine, 1989,(4):220]
3) Toxic intestinal paralysis: Along with anti-infection treatment, 100–200 g Mirabilite placed in a square cloth bag about 12 cm in size, applied externally to the middle and lower abdomen, fixed with adhesive tape, covered with hot water bag for 0.5–1 hour. Treated 285 cases: 118 cured within 4 hours, 158 improved, 9 ineffective, effective rate 96.8%. [Jiangsu Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1997,18(10):20]
4) Acute vestibular adenitis: 60 g Mirabilite mixed with 3 g Bing Pian, placed in cloth bag, applied to affected area. One course is 10 days. Treated 58 cases: 37 cured, 21 markedly effective, total effective rate 100%. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1997,32(3):141]
