[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The nest of the giant hornet contains nidus vespae oil, beeswax, resin, various sugars, vitamins, and inorganic salts.
2. Pharmacological effects: Subcutaneous injection of aqueous extract of nidus vespae significantly inhibits ear inflammation induced by croton oil in normal and adrenalectomized mice; it markedly suppresses acetic acid-induced writhing in mice, indicating efficacy against chronic dull pain; it significantly lowers normal body temperature in both normal and adrenalectomized mice; it promotes thrombosis in vitro in rats, increasing average thrombus length, wet and dry weight, and platelet adhesion rate; the aqueous extract significantly reduces peripheral vascular resistance, lowering blood pressure in anesthetized dogs and rats; it inhibits human liver cancer cells and shows some inhibitory effect on gastric cancer.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Toothache: Place nidus vespae in an appropriate amount of pure ethanol, ignite and burn until it turns to black ash, then apply the ash with a finger to the affected tooth. Pain relief generally occurs within 4–5 minutes. In 58 cases treated, 21 were markedly effective, 33 effective, and 4 ineffective. [Xin Zhong Yi, 1982, (12):51] 2) Postpartum lactation deficiency: Take one hornet’s nest, 500 g tofu, 10 g loofah fiber, add appropriate water and decoct; consume tofu and soup twice daily. In 35 cases treated, 19 markedly effective, 14 effective, 2 ineffective, total effective rate 94%. [Xin Zhong Yi, 1990, (3):9] 3) Refractory traumatic infection: Take 50 g nidus vespae, boil in 2000 ml water in a porcelain basin for 5 minutes; when temperature drops to 30–40°C, rinse the infected area for 20–30 minutes twice daily. In 172 cases treated, after 10–18 days of treatment, exudate was significantly reduced and fresh granulation tissue grew. [Zhongguo Minjian Liaofa, 2003, 11(4):28]
