[Overview] This herb is also known as Golden Hair Gouji, Golden Gouji, Yellow Dog Head, and Old Monkey Hair. It is the rhizome of Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Smith, a plant of the Dicksoniaceae family. It is distributed throughout most regions of China, mainly produced in Fujian and Sichuan provinces. The rhizomes are harvested in autumn and winter, cleaned of mud and sand, and dried; or the hard roots, petioles, and hairs are removed, then cut into thick slices and dried, known as “Raw Gouji slices.” After boiling or steaming, the slices are sun-dried to about 60-70% dryness, then cut into thick slices and dried, known as “Cooked Gouji slices.”

[Properties] Bitter and sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies the Liver and Kidneys, strengthens the lower back and knees, dispels wind and dampness.

[Applications]
1. Used for soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, joint pain, and difficulty bending and stretching. Particularly suitable for lower back pain and stiffness with inability to bend or extend due to Liver and Kidney deficiency combined with invasion of wind, cold, and dampness, accompanied by weakness of feet and knees. Commonly used with Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), and Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), as in the formula Gouji Wan (狗脊丸). For wind-cold-damp painful obstruction with joint pain, often combined with Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), and Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix).
2. Used for frequent urination, enuresis, spermatorrhea, and excessive leukorrhea due to Kidney Yang deficiency. For elderly patients with frequent urination, it can be used alone or combined with Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus), Fu Ling (Poria), and Du Zhong. For male Kidney deficiency with spermatorrhea and weakness of the lower back and knees, combined with Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Fu Shen (Poriae Sclerotium Pararadicis), and Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). For women with Chong and Ren channel deficiency cold and pure white leukorrhea, combined with Lu Jiao (Cervi Cornu) and Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium).
Additionally, when decocted with Dang Gui, it can treat postpartum foot edema; for external bleeding injuries, after disinfecting with Gouji hairs, applying to wounds can stop bleeding.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; or soaked in wine. External use: appropriate amount, fresh herb mashed and applied topically.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of Kidney deficiency with heat, urinary difficulty; or with symptoms of red, scanty urine, bitter mouth, and dry tongue.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Contains pterosins, cibotioside, cibotioside 2′-O-glucosylrhamnoside, etc. The rhizome hairs contain tannins and pigments.
2. Pharmacological effects: 100% Gouji injection at 20 kg increases myocardial uptake of 86Rb in mice by 54%; Gouji hairs have good hemostatic effects.
3. Clinical reports: For surface ulcers, applying an appropriate amount of Gouji hairs externally 2–3 times daily. In 50 cases of surface ulcers caused by rheumatism, burns, trauma, or non-healing surgical wounds, and chronic lower limb ulcers, 48 cases were cured. [Railway Medicine, 1993, (3):172]
