[Overview] This herb is also known as Dingzi Xiang, Male Clove, and Common Clove. It is the flower bud of the Myrtaceae plant Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. Originally native to the Malay Archipelago and Africa, it is now cultivated in Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, and Yunnan provinces of China. The flower buds begin white from September to March of the following year, gradually turn green, and are harvested when they become bright red. The flower stalks are removed and the buds are sun-dried.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Spleen, Stomach, and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Warms the middle burner and descends rebellious qi; tonifies the Kidney and assists Yang.
[Applications] 1. Used for hiccup, vomiting, and cold pain in the epigastrium and abdomen. When cold evil directly invades the Spleen and Stomach, or from raw and cold food causing cold stagnation in the middle burner and suppression of Yang qi with rebellious Stomach qi leading to hiccup, it is often used with warm herbs such as Gao Liang Jiang (Alpinia officinarum) and Shi Di (Persimmon calyx). For weak Stomach qi, it can be combined with Ren Shen (Ginseng) or Dang Shen (Codonopsis), as in Ding Xiang Shi Di Tang (Clove and Persimmon Calyx Decoction). For vomiting due to cold in the interior Stomach, it can be paired with Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) and Ban Xia (Pinellia). For pregnancy-related morning sickness, it is decocted with Ren Shen and Huo Xiang (Agastache). For deficiency cold diarrhea with cold pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, it is used together with Rou Gui (Cinnamon bark), Bai Zhu (Atractylodes), and Rou Dou Kou (Nutmeg).
2. Used for impotence and uterine cold deficiency, it can be combined with Fu Zi (Aconite), Rou Gui, and Ba Ji Tian (Morinda root).
Additionally, when used with Rou Gui, it can treat yin sores; the single herb decoction or ethanol extract applied topically can treat skin itching or tinea.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted as a tea, 1–3 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and applied topically or used as a tincture for external application.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in heat syndromes and yin deficiency with internal heat. Avoid combining with Yu Jin (Curcuma).
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: The flower buds contain 16%–18% volatile oil (clove oil), mainly composed of eugenol (70%–80%), acetyl eugenol (7%–17%), and small amounts of α- and β-caryophyllene, humulene, piperitol, and α-ylangene. The buds also contain four flavonoid derivatives, all flavonoid aglycones, including rhamnetin and kaempferol; additionally, ursolic acid, prunasin, prunasin hydrate, and isoprunin hydrate are present.
2. Pharmacological effects: Clove stimulates gastric acid and pepsin secretion, relieves abdominal distension, enhances digestion, and reduces nausea and vomiting. Extracts have anti-gastric ulcer, antidiarrheal, analgesic, anti-hypoxia, antibacterial, anticoagulant, antimutagenic, and bile secretion-promoting effects.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Pediatric diarrhea: 5–10 g clove, 0.4–6 g cinnamon, 5–10 g mu xiang (costus root) ground into fine powder, placed in a gauze bag and tied to the child’s navel overnight. Among 76 cases treated, 56 were cured, 16 markedly effective, and 4 improved. Generally effective after 1–3 treatments. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985,(6):75] 2) Pregnancy vomiting: 15 g clove and 20 g ban xia (Pinellia) ground into fine powder, mixed with concentrated decoction of 30 g fresh ginger to form a paste. Applied to the navel and fixed with adhesive tape. Vomiting gradually stopped after one day, and normal eating resumed after three days of application. [Intermediate Medical Journal, 1987, 22(10):44] 3) Paralytic intestinal obstruction: 30–60 g clove powder mixed with 75% ethanol, applied to the navel and surrounding area (6–8 cm diameter), covered and fixed with gauze, plastic film, and waist cloth. Twenty cases treated, all effective. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1988,(11):55] 4) Premature ejaculation: 20 g each of clove and xixin (Asarum), soaked in 100 ml 75% ethanol for half a month. The extract is applied to the glans penis; intercourse occurs 1.5–3 minutes later. Among 156 cases treated, good results were seen especially for premature ejaculation caused by psychological factors, with single use of this formula effective. [New Chinese Medicine, 1988,(4):13]
