[Overview] This herb is also known as Zhi Xue Dan, Large-leaf Aromatic Herb, Wild Mint, and Mountain Agastache. It is the aerial part of plants from the Lamiaceae family: Clinopodium polycephalum (Vaniot) C.Y. Wu et Hsuan or Clinopodium chinense (Benth.) O. Kuntze. It is widely distributed across most regions of China. Harvest before flowering in spring, remove dirt and sand, wash clean, cut into sections, and dry in the sun or use fresh.

[Properties] Slightly bitter and astringent in taste, with a cool nature.

[Actions] Cools the blood and stops bleeding; clears heat and detoxifies.

[Applications]
1. Used for bleeding due to blood heat. For example, to treat excessive menstruation in women and prolonged lochia after childbirth, often combined with Puhuang (Typha pollen), Palm charcoal, Moutan cortex, etc.; for hemoptysis, commonly combined with Bai Ji (Bletilla), Ce Bai Ye (Biota leaf), Huang Qin (Scutellaria root), etc.; for hematemesis and bloody stools, can be used with San Qi (Notoginseng), Bai Ji, Di Yu (Sanguisorba root), etc.; for purpura on skin and muscles, can be combined with Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia root), Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis), Da Zao (Jujube), etc.; for traumatic bleeding, the dried herb can be ground into powder and sprinkled on the affected area.
2. Used for heat toxin carbuncles, snake and insect bites; can be decocted and taken internally or the fresh herb can be pounded and applied topically.

1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains Clinopodium saponin A and dandelion-derived 9,12,17-triene-3β,23-diol, among others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Duanxueliu powder has a good hemostatic effect, significantly shortening bleeding time, with stronger hemostatic action than Yunnan Baiyao; Duanxueliu water extract, alcohol extract, and crude saponins can increase contraction of isolated vascular strips from rabbits and guinea pigs, with effects similar to norepinephrine but slower, milder, and longer-lasting; total saponins from Duanxueliu inhibit immune function in mice; total saponins inhibit carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats, showing anti-inflammatory effects; they also inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Shigella, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
