[Overview] This herb is also known as Huapi, Huazhou Juhong, Juhong, and Youpi. It is the outer immature or nearly mature pericarp of Citrus grandis ‘Tomentosa’ or Citrus grandis (L.) Osbeck of the Rutaceae family. The pericarp of Huazhou pomelo is hairy and called “Mao Juhong” or “Mao Qigua,” mainly produced in Maoxian, Guangdong; the pomelo pericarp is hairless and called “Guang Juhong” or “Guang Muguo,” mainly produced in Jiangjin and Qijiang, Chongqing, Sichuan. The fruit is harvested in summer when immature, briefly blanched in boiling water, then the peel is scraped into 5–7 sections, removing the pulp and some of the mesocarp, pressed into shape, and dried in the sun or shade.

[Properties] Pungent and bitter in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Lung and Spleen meridians.

[Actions] Dries dampness and transforms phlegm; regulates qi and promotes digestion.

[Applications]
1. Used for phlegm stagnation in the chest with cough and asthma. Particularly suitable for cough and asthma caused by cold phlegm or damp phlegm with abundant sputum and chest oppression; can be combined with Pinellia (Banxia), Perilla seed (Suzi), and Apricot kernel (Xingren). For cough with sputum that stops coughing but accompanied by shortness of breath, thirst, and dry throat, it can be combined with Trichosanthes fruit (Gualou), Ophiopogon (Maidong), and Farfara flower (Kuandonghua) to relieve asthma.
2. Used for abdominal distention and vomiting due to qi stagnation or food retention in the spleen and stomach. Particularly suitable for cold-damp obstruction causing qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach with epigastric and abdominal distention, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; often combined with Atractylodes (Cangzhu) and Magnolia bark (Houpo). For spleen qi deficiency with qi stagnation, abdominal pain relieved by pressure, poor appetite, and postprandial abdominal distention, it can be combined with Codonopsis (Dangshen), Atractylodes (Baizhu), and Poria (Fuling). For food retention, it can be combined with Hawthorn (Shanzha), Malt (Maiya), and Aurantii Fructus (Zhike). For pregnancy vomiting, it can be combined with Atractylodes (Baizhu), Perilla leaf (Suye), and fresh ginger (Shengjiang). For food stagnation with esophageal obstruction and poor appetite, it can be combined with Curcuma (Yujin) and Amomum (Sharen).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–6 g; or incorporated into pills and powders.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of qi deficiency, yin deficiency, and dry cough with scanty phlegm.

1. Chemical constituents: This herb contains volatile oils, mainly citral, nerol, linalool, methyl anthranilate, limonene, and epoxy eugenol; flavonoids including naringin, neohesperidin, hesperidin, tangeretin, and chuanchenpiside; also contains synephrine, umbelliferone, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, carotene, vitamins B and C, niacin, calcium, phosphorus, and iron.
2. Pharmacological actions: The limonene and pinene in Exocarpium Citri Grandis have expectorant and antitussive effects; limonene strongly inhibits Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes type A, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro; nerol and linalool also have antibacterial and antifungal effects. The volatile oil mildly stimulates the gastrointestinal tract, facilitating the expulsion of intestinal gas and promoting gastric juice secretion, aiding digestion.
