[Overview] This item is also known as Fluorite Stone. It is a fluorine-containing mineral of the fluorite group, Fluorite. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Hunan, Henan, Gansu, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Shanxi, Shandong, and other regions. It can be mined year-round. The purple-colored specimens are selected for medicinal use, washed clean of adhering gravel and clay.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Heart, Lung, and Kidney meridians.

[Actions] Calms the heart and pacifies the spirit; warms the lungs and descends rebellious qi; disperses cold and warms the uterus.

[Applications]
1. Used for palpitations, fright epilepsy, and convulsions. For palpitations, fright, and insomnia due to qi and blood deficiency and insufficient heart qi, it can be combined with Sour Jujube Seed (Suan Zao Ren), Poria (Fu Shen), Angelica (Dang Gui), Codonopsis (Dang Shen), etc., as in Zishiying San (紫石英散). For wind-heat epilepsy and convulsions, it can be combined with Gypsum (Shi Gao), Rhubarb (Da Huang), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Oyster Shell (Mu Li), etc., as in Feng Yin Tang (风引汤).
2. Used for cough and asthma due to lung cold or lung and kidney deficiency. For lung deficiency cold cough with shortness of breath and profuse white sputum, it can be combined with Aster Root (Zi Wan), Coltsfoot Flower (Kuan Dong Hua), Apricot Seed (Xing Ren), etc. For cough and reversed qi due to lung and kidney deficiency with inability to grasp qi, it can be combined with Rehmannia (Shu Di Huang), Walnut Meat (Hu Tao Rou), Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi).
3. Used for uterine cold infertility and excessive uterine bleeding or vaginal discharge due to decline of Mingmen fire and exhaustion of the lower source. It can be combined with Rehmannia (Shu Di Huang), Lycium Fruit (Gou Qi Zi), Angelica (Dang Gui), etc.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 9–15 g, crushed and decocted first; or used in pills or powders. To calm the heart and settle convulsions, use raw; to warm the lungs, descend rebellious qi, disperse cold, and warm the uterus, use calcined and quenched form.

[Cautions] Do not use long-term or in excessive amounts. Use with caution in cases of yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity and heat in the blood level.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include calcium fluoride (CaF2), with trace amounts of iron oxide, cadmium, chromium, copper, manganese, nickel, lead, zinc, yttrium, cerium, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Fluorite excites the central nervous system and stimulates ovarian secretion. Since it mainly contains CaF2, excessive intake of fluorine can damage teeth, bones, nervous system, kidneys, cardiovascular system, and thyroid gland; therefore, long-term use is not recommended.
