[Overview] This herb is also known as Zhujie Sanqi, Zhujie Renshen, and Zhugenqi. It is the rhizome of Panax japonicus C.A. Mey., a plant of the Araliaceae family. It is mainly produced in Yunnan, Sichuan, and Guizhou provinces, with additional production in Shaanxi and Guangxi. It is harvested in autumn by digging up, removing the main root and outer bark, then sun-dried or baked dry.

[Properties] Taste is sweet and slightly bitter; nature is warm. It enters the Lung, Spleen, and Liver meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies and strengthens, stops cough and transforms phlegm, disperses blood stasis and stops bleeding.

[Applications]
1. Used for weakness after illness and fatigue; can be steamed with rock sugar or chicken for strengthening effects.
2. Used for consumptive cough with or without phlegm; can be used alone or combined with walnut kernel and honey to tonify the Lung and stop cough.
3. Used for blood stasis causing amenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain due to stasis, and abdominal masses; often combined with safflower, Angelica sinensis, peach kernel, and insect-derived medicines.
4. Used for traumatic injuries and rheumatic arthralgia; for the former, used alone or combined with Ligusticum chuanxiong, Angelica sinensis, safflower, and turmeric; for the latter, often combined with Asarum, Notopterygium, and Cynanchum.
5. Used for abscesses, hemorrhoids, and poisonous snake bites; often combined with Lonicera japonica, Taraxacum, and Viola yedoensis; if hemorrhoids cause bleeding, can be combined with Sanguisorba officinalis, Sophora japonica, and Reynoutria japonica.
