[Overview] This herb is also known as Bajitian, Jitian, and Tu’erchang. It is the root of Morinda officinalis How, a plant of the Rubiaceae family. It is mainly produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Jiangxi, Sichuan, and other regions. It can be harvested year-round, washed clean, with fibrous roots removed, sun-dried to about 60-70% dryness, lightly pounded flat, and then fully dried.
[Properties] It tastes pungent and sweet, with a slightly warm nature. It enters the liver and kidney meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies kidney yang, strengthens sinews and bones, dispels wind-dampness.
[Applications]
1. Used for kidney yang deficiency with impotence, spermatorrhea, premature ejaculation, lower abdominal cold pain, and infertility due to uterine cold. For impotence and spermatorrhea, it can be combined with Rehmanniae Preparata (Shu Di Huang), Psoralea (Bu Gu Zhi), and Rosa laevigata (Jin Ying Zi). For female infertility and male sterility, it is combined with Epimedium (Yin Yang Huo), Rehmanniae Preparata, and Angelica (Dang Gui), as in the formula Zan Yu Dan. For frequent urination due to kidney deficiency without retention, it can be combined with Alpinia oxyphylla (Yi Zhi Ren), Cicada slough (Sang Piao Xiao), and Cuscuta (Tu Si Zi). For kidney yang deficiency causing cold in the Chong and Ren channels with lower abdominal cold pain and irregular menstruation, it is combined with Alpinia officinarum (Gao Liang Jiang), Cinnamon (Rou Gui), and Evodia (Wu Zhu Yu), as in the formula Bajitian Wan.
2. Used for liver and kidney deficiency causing weakness of sinews and bones, and cold pain in the lumbar and knees, it can be combined with Cistanche (Rou Cong Rong), Eucommia (Du Zhong), and Cuscuta (Tu Si Zi), as in the formula Jin Gang Wan. This herb can also treat cold-damp low back pain and difficulty walking, often combined with Achyranthes (Niu Xi), Notopterygium (Qiang Huo), and Cinnamon bark (Gui Xin).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or used in pills or powders; or soaked in wine or made into a paste.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with fire excess and damp-heat syndromes.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include sugars, flavonoids, steroidal triterpenes, amino acids, organic acids, cardiac glycosides, trace anthraquinones, vitamin C, resins, and cycloether terpenoid glycosides. It also contains various inorganic elements such as iron, manganese, zinc, chromium, calcium, and copper.
2. Pharmacological effects: Morinda Root exhibits androgen-like effects; it significantly promotes adrenal cortex hormone activity and enhances hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian luteotropic function; it increases body weight and prolongs swimming endurance in mice, raises white blood cell count, increases oxygen consumption in hypothyroid mice, inhibits thymic atrophy in juvenile mice, and has some antihypertensive effects.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Nephrotic syndrome: 30 g Morinda Root and 30 g Cornus officinalis decocted and taken orally. Treated 21 children with typical Cushing syndrome nephrotic syndrome with good efficacy. [Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1985, (3):192] (2) Pediatric pertussis: 4 g Euphorbia kansui and 4 g Morinda Root with 20 g flour made into powder; dosage by age: 0.5 g for 4 months to 1 year, 1 g for 1–3 years, 1.5 g for 3–6 years, 2 g for 6–10 years; taken three times daily with warm water. Among 50 cases treated, 40 cured in 10–20 days, 9 markedly effective, 1 ineffective. [Shanghai Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984, (10):24] (3) Depression: oral Morinda Root water extract capsules (100 mg per capsule), 200 mg on day 1; 300 mg on day 2; 600 mg on days 3–14, divided into three doses daily. On day 14, dose adjusted based on HAMD score reduction rate; if less than 30%, dose increased to 900 mg daily on days 15–42; otherwise maintained at 600 mg until end. One course is 4–6 weeks; 5 cases had 4-week course, 11 cases had 6-week course. Cure rate 31.25% (5/16), significant improvement 31.25% (5/16), no effect 37.5% (6/16), total effective rate 62.5%.
