[Overview] This product is also known as Toad Venom, Toad Gland Secretion, Toad Slime, or Toad Butter. It is the secretion from the toad family animals, specifically the Chinese toad Bufobufogargarizans Cantor or the black-spotted toad Bufomelanostictus Schneider. It is mainly produced in Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and other regions. Toads are mostly captured in summer and autumn, washed clean, and the white secretion from the postauricular glands and skin glands is squeezed out, processed, and dried.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature, and toxic. Enters the Heart and Liver meridians.
[Actions] Detoxifies, relieves pain, opens orifices and awakens the spirit, kills parasites.
[Applications] Relieves itching.
1. Used for carbuncles, furuncles, scrofula, and tuberculosis. Often used together with musk, frankincense, myrrh, etc. If the lesion is locally red, swollen, and painful, it can be combined with cold water stone, cinnabar, verdigris, snail, etc., as in formulas such as Chansu Pills (蟾酥丸). If the carbuncle skin color does not change but there is diffuse swelling and wooden hardness pain, it is often combined with Sichuan aconite and others; if the carbuncle has suppurated, it can be made into a thin cake with lime and applied to the sore.
2. Used for sore throat, toothache, and dental caries. For treating sore throat swelling and pain, it can be combined with bezoar and pearl to make pills, such as Liushen Pills (六神丸); for wind-fire toothache, it can be used alone or combined with realgar, borax, licorice, etc., made into pills and placed on the painful tooth; for rapidly progressing dental caries with blackened gums, it can be combined with musk, Bai Ren Zhong (philtrum white), and light powder, ground into powder and applied topically, as in musk ointment and Bixiao Powder (必效散).
3. Used for summer heat abdominal distension and pain, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, even fainting. Often combined with musk, realgar, Atractylodes, clove, etc., as in Chansu Pills.
Currently, this product is also used for treating malignant tumors, heart failure, and various types of shock.
[Dosage and Administration] External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically or mixed into plasters and applied to affected areas. Internal use: incorporated into pills or powders, 0.015–0.03 g per dose.
[Cautions] Do not apply externally to the eyes. Use with caution during pregnancy.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Bufonis Venenum mainly contains bufadienolide steroids, cardiotonic bufotoxins, indole alkaloids, sterols, and other chemical components. It also contains polysaccharides, organic acids, amino acids, peptides, and adrenaline.
2. Pharmacological effects: Bufotoxin derivatives and bufotoxin compounds have cardiotonic effects; Bufonis Venenum can prolong fibrinogen coagulation time, with anticoagulant effects similar to urokinase; it has a significant effect of raising arterial pressure; ethanol extracts of toad secretion show good efficacy against endotoxin-induced shock; it inhibits platelet aggregation in degree and speed; Hua Chan toxin enhances contraction of rat vas deferens induced by norepinephrine; aqueous extracts stimulate respiration, increasing amplitude and frequency; bufadienolides and Hua Chan toxin have antitumor effects; ethanol extracts of Chinese giant toad secretion and flower-backed toad secretion inhibit foot swelling.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Premature contractions: Bufonis Venenum capsules or tablets containing 1 mg bufadienolide each, initially 1 mg orally three times daily. In 80 cases of frequent premature ventricular contractions (≥5 times/min), 26 cases showed marked effect, 29 cases effective, total effective rate 68.8%. [Chinese Journal of Cardiovascular Diseases, 1981, 9(3):227] 2) Tuberculous and chronic itchy osteomyelitis fistula: 0.1 g Bufonis Venenum ground fine mixed with 100 ml sesame oil, soaked gauze strips used to fill wounds for 1–2 hours, changed once daily or every other day. In 40 cases, 36 clinically cured, 4 improved, total effective rate 100%. [Chinese Medicine Bulletin, 1981, (6):35] 3) Advanced malignant digestive system tumors: Bufonis Venenum injection 20 ml daily plus Salvia injection 20 ml and 250 ml saline intravenously drip for 30 days as one course. In 30 cases, quality of life scores improved, especially in stage III tumor patients. [Hubei Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2003, 25(7):42] 4) Neurodermatitis: after tapping lesions with plum blossom needle, apply Bufonis Venenum liquid twice daily. In 98 cases, 78 cured, 18 improved, 2 ineffective, total effective rate 97.9%. [Journal of Clinical Dermatology, 1986, (3):157] 5) Intractable hiccup: intramuscular injection of Hua Chan toxin 2–4 ml, 2–3 times daily. In 25 cases, hiccup disappeared after 2 days in 16 cases, after 3 days in 6 cases, significantly relieved after 4 days in 3 cases, total effective rate 100%.
