[Overview] This herb is also known as Suoyang, Bu Laoyao, Di Maoqiu, and Suoyanzi. It is the fleshy stem of Cynomorium songaricum Rupr., a plant of the Cynomoriaceae family. It is mainly produced in Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai, and other regions. Harvested in spring and autumn, the fleshy stems are dug out, with inflorescences and impurities such as mud and sand removed, then cut into sections and sun-dried.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the spleen, kidney, and large intestine meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies the kidney and strengthens yang, benefits essence and blood, moistens the intestines and unblocks the bowels.

[Applications]
1. Used for kidney deficiency with essence depletion, impotence, and premature ejaculation; often combined with Cistanche (Rou Cong Rong), Mulberry Moth (Sang Piao Xiao), Dodder Seed (Tu Si Zi), and Rehmannia (Shu Di Huang). For kidney deficiency with bone weakness and symptoms of weakness in the lumbar and knees, often combined with Rehmannia, Turtle Shell (Gui Ban), Tiger Bone (Hu Gu), etc., as in the formula Hu Qian Wan.
2. Used for blood deficiency with dryness of fluids and intestinal dryness causing constipation; can be combined with Cistanche, Angelica (Dang Gui), Hemp Seed (Ma Ren), and Biota Seed (Bai Zi Ren); or used alone as a concentrated decoction with honey added to form a paste for administration.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with excessive fire, spleen deficiency with diarrhea, and constipation due to excess heat. Long-term use may also cause constipation.

1. Chemical constituents: Herb Cynomorii contains cynomorins, acetyl ursolic acid, ursolic acid, as well as fatty acids, fatty oils, sterols, and amino acids.
2. Pharmacological effects: Herb Cynomorii significantly increases spleen weight in yang-deficient animals, increases neutrophil count, and promotes humoral immune function; it significantly prevents the decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and the increase of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in serum and mitochondria caused by white spirit damage, but does not counteract the decrease of catalase (CAT) activity caused by white spirit damage; it prolongs survival time under normobaric hypoxia and isoproterenol-induced hypoxia in mice, extends survival time after intravenous air injection, and increases the duration and frequency of mouth-opening movements in decapitated mice; total glycosides and total steroids of Herb Cynomorii significantly inhibit ADP-induced platelet aggregation in rat blood in vitro, showing a good dose-effect relationship.
3. Clinical reports: Chronic primary thrombocytopenic purpura: Herb Cynomorii, Astragalus (Huang Qi), and Cinnamon (Rou Gui) each 20 g, decocted and taken twice daily; half dose for children. A total of 35 cases treated, results: markedly effective in 6 cases, effective in 19 cases, improved in 8 cases, ineffective in 2 cases, with a total effective rate of 94.3%.
