[Overview] This herb is also known as Meishi, Xingmei, Xunmei, and Suanmei. It is the nearly mature fruit of the Rosaceae family plant Prunus mume (Sieb.) Sieb. et Zucc. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Fujian, Yunnan, and other regions. The fruit is harvested when nearly mature in summer, then dried at low temperature and sealed until it turns black.
[Properties] Sour and astringent in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Liver, Spleen, Lung, and Large Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Astringes the Lung, restrains the intestines, stops bleeding, generates fluids, and calms roundworms.
[Applications]
1. Used for chronic cough due to Lung deficiency; can be used alone or combined with poppy shell, apricot kernel, donkey-hide gelatin, pinellia, etc., in formulas such as Ningfei San and Yifu San. For chronic consumptive cough with hoarseness, it can be combined with Chebula and Fritillaria.
2. Used for chronic diarrhea and dysentery. For persistent dysentery, it can be used alone or combined with poppy shell and Chebula in formulas such as Gutang Wan. When combined with Coptis, it can treat damp-heat diarrhea by its astringent effect on the intestines.
3. Used for bleeding from the stool, urine, and metrorrhagia. For bloody stools, it can be combined with dried persimmon in formulas such as Meishi Bing; for bleeding due to visceral toxins, it can be combined with Rehmannia glutinosa, Sanguisorba, and Sophora japonica; for uterine bleeding, it can be combined with palm charcoal and dried ginger.
4. Used for deficiency heat with thirst; can be used alone or combined with licorice and salt in formulas such as Zaohua Tang; also combined with Ophiopogon, Rehmannia glutinosa, and licorice in formulas such as Wumei San.
5. Used for roundworm colic, vomiting, and cold limbs; often combined with Asarum, dried ginger, Coptis, and Sichuan pepper in formulas such as Wumei Wan.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted, 3–10 g; or used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, burned to preserve efficacy, ground into powder for sprinkling or applied as a paste. For stopping diarrhea and dysentery, the charred form is preferred.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases with exterior syndrome and internal excess pathogenic factors.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Fructus Mume contains citric acid, malic acid, oxalic acid, succinic acid, and protopine acid; also contains 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. Its volatile components mainly include benzaldehyde, 4-terpineol, benzyl alcohol, and palmitic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Fructus Mume has excitatory and stimulating effects causing roundworms to retreat; mild contraction effect on the gallbladder and promotes bile secretion; its decoction antagonizes anaphylactic shock induced by guinea pig egg albumin and histamine shock, with some desensitizing effects; inhibits various pathogenic bacteria including Shigella dysenteriae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and paratyphi, Bordetella pertussis, Neisseria meningitidis, and some fungi.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Chronic colitis: 15 g Fructus Mume decocted with 1500 ml water to 1000 ml, sweetened appropriately, taken once daily as tea for 25 days. Among 18 cases, 15 cured, 3 improved. [Heilongjiang Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1991,(4):43] 2) Acute gastrointestinal bleeding: equal parts charred Fructus Mume, cuttlefish bone, and rhubarb ground into fine powder, taken 3 times daily, 10–20 g each time, or rhubarb increased 1–2 times, soaked in boiling water and taken as Erwu powder. 44 cases treated, all cured. [Heilongjiang Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1993,(1):34] 3) Viral hepatitis: 40–50 g Fructus Mume decocted with 500 ml water concentrated to 250 ml, taken in one or two doses daily. 74 cases treated, 66 markedly effective, 7 effective. [Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1986,6(11):694] 4) Severe vomiting in pregnancy: 50 g Fructus Mume soaked in warm water, washed, pounded, pitted, mixed with appropriate sugar, taken in divided doses for 3 days per course, no dietary restrictions, combined with treatment for other symptoms. Among 202 cases, 124 effective within 1 day, 55 within 2 days, 19 within 3 days, 4 ineffective after 3 days; total effective rate 98%.
