[Overview] This herb is also known as Zao Ren or Suanzao He. It is the mature seed of Ziziphus jujuba Mill. var. spinosa (Bunge) Huex H.F. Chow, a plant of the Rhamnaceae family. It is mainly produced in Hebei, Shaanxi, Liaoning, and Hunan provinces, with additional production in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Shanxi, Shandong, and Anhui. The mature fruit is harvested in late autumn to early winter; the pulp and shell are removed, and the seeds are collected and sun-dried.

[Properties] Taste: sweet and sour; nature: neutral. Channels entered: Liver, Gallbladder, Heart meridians.

[Applications]
1. Used for deficiency-induced irritability and insomnia due to heart and liver blood deficiency, characterized by restless sleep with frequent awakening, palpitations, and anxiety. Commonly combined with He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum), Long Yan Rou (Longan aril), Bai Zi Ren (Biota seed), etc. For liver deficiency with heat and irritability causing insomnia, often combined with Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena), Fu Ling (Poria), as in Suan Zao Ren Tang (Sour Jujube Seed Decoction). For heart and spleen deficiency with palpitations and insomnia, combined with Ren Shen (Ginseng), Fu Shen (Poria spirit), Long Yan Rou, as in Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction). For yin deficiency with hyperactive yang causing palpitations and insomnia, combined with Bai Zi Ren, Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia root), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra), as in Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Emperor of Heaven’s Special Pill to Tonify the Heart).
2. Used for spontaneous sweating or night sweating due to deficiency, especially when accompanied by irritability and insomnia; often combined with Wu Wei Zi, Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus), Bai Shao (White Peony).
This herb also has astringent yin and generates fluids, useful for thirst and dry throat due to fluid injury; often combined with Sheng Di Huang, Mai Dong (Ophiopogon), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes root).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 9–15 g; or used in pills and powders.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Semen Ziziphi Spinosae contains jujuboside alkaloids including jujuboside A and N-methyl-beta-carboline alkaloids D. It also contains triterpenoids such as betulinic acid and betulin, flavonoids including spinosin and swertisin, as well as ferulic acid, vitamin C, phytosterols, cyclic adenosine monophosphate, 17 amino acids, and multiple elements including potassium, calcium, zinc, iron, copper, and manganese.
2. Pharmacological effects: Semen Ziziphi Spinosae exhibits sedative and hypnotic effects in mice, guinea pigs, cats, rabbits, and dogs; its decoction has analgesic, anticonvulsant, and antipyretic effects; the aqueous solution of its alcohol extract shows antiarrhythmic and anti-myocardial ischemic effects; intraperitoneal or intravenous injection significantly improves ECG changes caused by posterior pituitary hormone-induced myocardial ischemia in rats; total saponins significantly reduce total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and significantly increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and its subfraction 2 in rats; total saponins enhance hypoxia tolerance in mice; the fruit pulp enhances food intake, body weight, physical strength, and learning and memory in mice.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Insomnia: roasted Semen Ziziphi Spinosae applied to auricular acupuncture points, primarily Shenmen and Subcortex, with supplementary points Heart, Kidney, and Brain. One to two points selected each time, applied bilaterally. Dressings changed every 5 days (every 3 days in summer), 4 treatments per course. Among 30 cases treated, 9 showed marked effect, 19 improved, 2 ineffective. [Xin Zhong Yi, 1992,(11):35]
2) Premature ejaculation: Semen Ziziphi Spinosae 30 g and fine tea powder 60 g ground together; administered with Ren Shen rootlets decoction 6 g per dose, twice daily. Four cases treated, all cured. [Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1982,(2):97]
