[Overview] This herb is also known as Baye or Lujieye. It is the leaf of Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl., a plant of the Rosaceae family. It is produced in East China, Central South China, Southwest China, as well as Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, with larger yields in Guangdong and Jiangsu. It can be harvested year-round. After picking, the leaves are sun-dried to about 70-80% dryness, tied into small bundles, and then further dried until fully dry.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Clears the Lung and stops cough, descends rebellious Qi and stops vomiting.

[Applications]
1. Used for Lung-heat cough, wind-heat cough, and chronic cough due to Lung deficiency. For Lung-heat cough with Qi rebellion and wheezing, it can be combined with Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis) and Gualou (Trichosanthes fruit). For wind-heat cough, it can be combined with Qianhu (Peucedanum) and Sangye (Mulberry leaf). For Lung dryness cough, it can be combined with Xingren (Apricot kernel), Sangye, Ejiao (Donkey-hide gelatin), Maidong (Ophiopogon japonicus), as in Qingzao Jiufei Tang (Clear Dryness and Rescue the Lung Decoction). For chronic cough due to Yin deficiency, even with blood-streaked sputum, it can be combined with Beishashen (Glehnia root), Maidong, Shengdi (Rehmannia root), and Baimaogen (Imperata root).
2. Used for vomiting and hiccup due to Stomach heat, often combined with Zhuru (Bamboo shavings), Banxia (Pinellia rhizome), Chenpi (Tangerine peel), etc. For morning sickness during pregnancy, it can be combined with Suzi (Perilla seed), Juhong (Tangerine peel), Zhuru, Maidong, etc. For persistent vomiting of milk in children, it can be combined with Mu Dingxiang (Clove powder) for resolving phlegm, administered with jujube soup, as in Pipaye San (Loquat Leaf Powder). Besides stopping cough, this herb can also be used for febrile disease with vexation and thirst, nasal redness, hemorrhoids, and asthma.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6-9 g; fresh herb 15-30 g; or made into a paste; or incorporated into pills or powders. To moisten the Lung, descend Qi, and stop cough and rebellious Qi, it is best stir-fried with honey; to harmonize the Stomach, descend Qi, and stop vomiting and rebellious Qi, it is best stir-fried with ginger juice.

[Cautions] When used in decoctions, it should be wrapped in a gauze bag. Contraindicated in vomiting due to Stomach cold and cough due to wind-cold.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Fresh leaves contain volatile oils, whose main components are nerolidol and linalool. Also contains α- and β-pinene, camphene, laurene, geijerene, linalool, α-ylangene, α- and β-linaloolene, camphor, santol alcohol, farnesol, etc. It also contains amygdalin, tartaric acid, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, citric acid, tannins, and mannitol.
2. Pharmacological effects: The amygdalin in loquat leaf can release hydrocyanic acid, which has sedative, antiasthmatic, and antitussive effects; the leaf’s oils have mild expectorant effects; the ether cold extract of loquat leaf applied topically strongly inhibits carrageenan-induced edema with an inhibition rate of 52%; the methanol extract contains sesquiterpene glycosides and polyhydroxy triterpene saponins that significantly reduce urine glucose in hereditary diabetic mice and also lower blood glucose in normal mice.
3. Clinical reports: For pediatric pinworm infection, fresh loquat leaves are brushed to remove back hair, washed, boiled with water for 1 hour, and the decoction concentrated and filtered to produce 200 ml containing 100 g of raw herb. Each patient takes 100 ml of the decoction before sleep and on an empty stomach the next morning. After 15 days, eggs are rechecked. A total of 122 cases were treated, with a negative conversion rate of 67.21%, perianal adult worm negative conversion rate of 78.85%, and perianal worm reduction rate of 88.14%.
