[Overview] This herb is also known as Yunpi or Yunhong. It is the outer pericarp of the fruit of Citrus reticulata Blanco of the Rutaceae family and its cultivated varieties. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Fujian, Sichuan, and other regions. The fruit is harvested when ripe in late autumn to early winter, the outer peel is removed, then sun-dried or shade-dried.
[Properties] It has a pungent and bitter taste and a warm nature. It enters the Lung and Spleen meridians.
[Actions] Disperses cold and dries dampness, regulates qi and transforms phlegm, relaxes the middle burner and strengthens the stomach.
[Applications]
1. Used for cough with profuse phlegm. Especially suitable for treating wind-cold cough with abundant phlegm and rebellious qi. Commonly combined with Ephedra (Mahuang), Perilla seed (Suzi), and Apricot kernel (Xingren), as in the formula Huagai San (华盖散). For damp-phlegm cough with phlegm obstruction and rebellious qi, chest fullness, and wheezing, it can be paired with Pinellia (Banxia) and Poria (Fuling), or combined with Magnolia bark (Houpo) and Aquilaria (Chenxiang). If damp-phlegm is accompanied by heat, with thick phlegm obstruction, obesity, and wheezing, it can be combined with Pinellia, Trichosanthes seed (Gualouren), and Scutellaria (Huangqin).
2. Used for middle burner damp turbidity causing epigastric and abdominal distention, nausea, and poor appetite. Often combined with Atractylodes (Cangzhu) and Magnolia bark (Houpo). If spleen and stomach are weak with abdominal distention and poor appetite, it is appropriate to combine with Atractylodes (Baizhu) and Amomum (Sharen), as in the formula Zhuwei Gao (助胃膏).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency dry cough, chronic cough, or qi deficiency.
