[Overview] This herb is also known as Kai Jin Suo, Ku Qiao Tou, Tian Qiao Mai, and Ye Qiao Mai. It is the rhizome of Fagopyrum dibotrys (D.Don) Hera, a plant of the Polygonaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, with additional production in Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Guizhou. Harvested in autumn and winter, the stems and fine roots are removed, then washed and sun-dried, or sliced fresh and sun-dried.

[Properties] Pungent and astringent in taste, cool in nature. Enters the Lung, Stomach, and Liver meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, expels pus and removes blood stasis, dispels wind and eliminates dampness.

[Applications]
1. Used for lung abscess, lung-heat cough, and sore throat. For lung abscess with heat toxin accumulating in the lung, presenting with fever, chest pain, and coughing up foul-smelling pus sputum, this herb can be used alone by placing it in a container with water and then steam decocted for administration; if the condition is prolonged and pus sputum is difficult to expectorate, it can be steamed with yellow wine or combined with Platycodon (Jiegeng), Peach kernel (Taoren), Coix seed (Yiyiren), and Houttuynia (Yuxingcao). For lung-heat cough and asthma, it can be combined with Ephedra (Mahuang), Apricot kernel (Xingren), and Gypsum (Shigao); for sore throat with redness, swelling, and pain, it can be combined with Platycodon (Jiegeng), Licorice (Gancao), and Belamcanda (Shegan).
2. Used for blood stasis causing amenorrhea or dysmenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain due to blood stasis, and wind-damp painful obstruction syndrome. For dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and postpartum abdominal pain due to blood stasis, it can be decocted with brown sugar or combined with Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Red peony root (Chishao), and Peach kernel (Taoren); for wind-damp painful obstruction with muscle and bone pain, it can be combined with Radix Angelicae Pubescentis (Duhuo), Angelica sinensis (Danggui), and Achyranthes (Niuxi).
3. Used for damp-heat dysentery, often combined with Portulaca (Machixian), Pulsatilla (Baitouweng), and Hawthorn (Shanzha).
4. Used externally for abscesses, sores, scrofula, and poisonous snake bites; can be applied topically as juice ground with vinegar or fresh herb mashed and applied externally.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 15–30 g; or powdered. External use: appropriate amount, juice or paste applied topically.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The rhizome contains dimeric proanthocyanidins, hederagenin saponins, β-sitosterol, tannins, and upon hydrolysis yields p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and glucose glycosides. Also contains levorotatory catechin.
2. Pharmacological effects: Extracts from the rhizome exhibit significant anticancer activity, with colony inhibition rates of 100% against various cancer cells at concentrations of 0.1 g/L and 0.05 g/L; inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with alcoholic extracts more potent than aqueous extracts; the extract enhances phagocytic function of mouse peritoneal macrophages without increasing total macrophage count.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Lung abscess: oral administration of aqueous or alcoholic extracts, 40 ml each time, three times daily; in a systematic observation of 395 cases, 288 cured, 33 improved. [Zhongcao Yao, 1982,(10):35] (2) Asthmatic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema, cor pulmonale: oral coated tablets, adults 3–4 tablets each time, three times daily, children reduced dose; in 50 cases treated (30 with emphysema, 14 with cor pulmonale), results were 6 controlled, 14 markedly effective, 17 improved, 13 ineffective, with an efficacy rate of 74.0%. [Nantong Yiyao, 1982,(1):104] (3) Bacterial dysentery: oral tablets or aqueous extract, 50 ml each time (40 ml for children), tablets 10 each time, three times daily; total cure rate 95% in 80 cases. [Nantong Yiyao, 1982,(1):96] (4) Primary dysmenorrhea: 50 g dried herb (70 g fresh), decocted twice daily, starting 3–5 days before normal menstruation, two doses consecutively; in 30 cases, 19 cured, 9 improved. [Zhongyi Zazhi, 1990,(8):39]
