[Overview] This herb is also known as Shihusui, Shihusui (alternate name), Wild Coriander, and Chicken Intestine Grass. It is the whole herb of Centipeda minima (L.) A.Br. et Ascher., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Hubei, Jiangsu, Guangdong, and other regions. It is harvested during flowering in summer and autumn, used fresh or dried.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Lung and Liver meridians.
[Actions] Dispels wind-cold, opens nasal passages, removes eye turbidity and brightens the eyes, stops cough and resolves phlegm, disperses blood stasis and reduces swelling.
[Applications] 1. Used for wind-cold exterior syndromes, nasal congestion with runny nose, and nasal obstruction. Can be used both internally and externally. Internally, often combined with Xin Yi (Magnolia flower), Cang Er Zi (Xanthium fruit), etc.; externally, ground with Xin Yi Hua, Xi Xin, Bai Zhi, and a small amount blown into the nose.
2. Used for red eyes with turbidity, pterygium encroaching on the cornea; can be combined with Qing Dai (Indigo naturalis), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong) ground into fine powder and applied into the nose until tears flow; or use fresh herb juice boiled and clarified, add a little Bing Pian (borneol) for eye drops.
3. Used for cough with excessive phlegm, pertussis, etc.; can be decocted alone with rock sugar or white sugar, taken in small doses multiple times; also combined with Ban Xia (Pinellia), Chen Pi (Citrus peel), etc.
4. Used for sores, carbuncles, swelling and pain, snake bites, bruises and injuries; fresh herb can be pounded and applied topically.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–9 g; or juice extracted and drunk. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and stuffed into the nose; or ground powder applied into the nose; or pounded and applied topically.
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains taraxasterol, taraxasterol acetate, taraxasterol palmitate, β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, luteolin, genistein, genistein acetate, and volatile oils.
2. Pharmacological effects: Hot water extract of Herb Centipeda has anti-allergic effects, certain anti-mutagenic and tumor growth inhibitory effects; volatile oil and ethanol extracts partially have antitussive, expectorant, and antiasthmatic effects; inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
3. Clinical reports: 1. Rhinitis: Herb Centipeda 15 g combined with Bai Zhi, Da Ye Mei, etc., made into a rhinitis medicinal mask. Treated 183 cases, markedly effective in 42 cases, effective in 116 cases, ineffective in 25 cases, with an effective rate of 86.34%. 2. Soft tissue injury: Fresh whole Herb Centipeda 200 g, stir-fried and then mixed with about 100 ml of 60-degree rice wine, applied hot to the affected area with rubbing for 3–5 minutes, then the medicine is applied to the area once daily.
