[Overview] This herb is also known as Lianqian Cao, Dixiancao, Luodeda, and Leigonggen. It is the whole herb of Centella asiatica (L.) Urb., a plant of the Apiaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Sichuan, and other regions. It is harvested in summer and autumn, cleaned of mud and sand, then dried or used fresh.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, cold in nature. Enters the liver, spleen, and kidney meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and promotes urination to remove dampness; cools the blood and stops bleeding; reduces swelling and detoxifies.

[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat jaundice, diarrhea and dysentery, and strangury. For damp-heat jaundice, it can be combined with Yinchen (Artemisia capillaris) and Diyer Recao; for damp-heat diarrhea, combined with Huangqin (Scutellaria baicalensis) and Baizhu (Atractylodes macrocephala); for damp-heat dysentery, often combined with Fengweicao (Pteris multifida); for hot strangury with difficult urination, combined with Mutong (Akebia) and Qumai (Dianthus superbus); for stone strangury, combined with Cheqianzi (Plantago seed) and Haijinsha (Lygodium japonicum).
2. Used for bleeding due to blood heat such as hematemesis, epistaxis, and hematuria; can be used alone as fresh herb juice or combined with Daxiao Ji (Sonchus oleraceus), Cebaiye (Platycladus orientalis leaf), and Hanliancao (Eclipta prostrata).
3. Used for fever and sore throat from common cold, red and swollen eyes, mastitis, mumps, erysipelas, and other heat-toxin syndromes; can be used singly or combined with Jinyinhua (Lonicera japonica), Lianqiao (Forsythia suspensa), and Danpi (Moutan cortex).
Additionally, it is used for irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, and traumatic swelling and pain.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 15–30 g; double dose if fresh; or juice extracted by pounding. External use: appropriate amount, applied as a poultice or juice applied topically.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include various α-amyrin-type triterpenoids, including asiaticoside and asiatic acid. Also contains madecassoside, myo-inositol, centelloside, asiatic acid, kaempferol, and quercetin.
2. Pharmacological effects: Asiaticoside has sedative and calming effects; promotes wound healing; water extract of young Centella asiatica shoots has antibacterial effects; reduces tension and contraction amplitude of isolated rabbit and rat ileum; antagonizes acetylcholine-induced ileal spasms.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Epidemic mumps: Centella asiatica doses for ages 3–5 years 30 g, 6–10 years 60 g, 11–14 years 90 g, over 14 years 140 g; washed, chopped, decocted twice, combined decoctions taken in three doses within 24 hours. Fresh herb juice mixed with a little rice vinegar applied topically 5–8 times daily. Treated 35 cases, all cured. [Fujian Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1990, 21(4):45]
2) Scleroderma: Asiaticoside tablets (6 mg asiaticoside per tablet), 3–4 tablets per dose, three times daily. Treated 100 cases: markedly effective in 33, improved in 49, ineffective in 18; total effective rate 82%. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985, 26(12):32]
