[Overview] This herb is also known as Qingma, Bimazi, Yezhumazi, and Baimazi. It is the mature seed of Abutilon theophrasti Medicus, a plant of the Malvaceae family. It is distributed throughout China. The fruit is harvested in autumn when ripe, dried in the sun, then the seeds are extracted by threshing, with the pericarp and impurities sieved out, followed by further drying.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Large Intestine and Bladder meridians.
[Actions] Clears damp-heat, detoxifies and reduces swelling, dispels visual obstructions and brightens the eyes.
[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat dysentery with red and white stools, and painful urinary dribbling. For dysentery, it can be taken alone as a powder or combined with Coptis (Huanglian), Scutellaria (Huangqin), and Pulsatilla (Baitouweng). For urinary difficulty and painful dribbling, it can be combined with Akebia (Mutong), Plantago seed (Cheqianzi), and Talc (Huashi).
2. Used for abscesses and toxic swellings; can be applied externally as a powder or combined with Dandelion (Pugongying), Forsythia (Lianqiao), and Gleditsia thorn (Zaojiao ci). Currently, it is used together with Vaccaria seed (Wangbuliuxing) and Pangolin scale (Chuanshanjia) decocted for treating milk stasis, promoting lactation and dispersing lumps.
3. Used for red eyes and visual obstructions; can be combined with Burdock seed (Niubangzi), Abutilon seed (Qingxiangzi), and Rabdosia (Gujingcao) decocted together.
