[Overview] This herb is also known as Wushan, Wupu, Yegan, and Guishan. It is the rhizome of Belamcandachinensis (L.) DC., a plant of the Iridaceae family. It is mainly produced in Hubei, Henan, Anhui, with additional production in Hunan, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Guizhou, and Yunnan. The rhizomes are dug up in spring and autumn, washed clean of soil, sun-dried, with fibrous roots removed, then dried thoroughly.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung meridian.
[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, dispels phlegm and benefits the throat, reduces blood stasis and dissipates nodules.
[Applications]
1. Used for sore throat and swelling of the throat. For sore throat and hoarseness caused by external wind-heat, often combined with Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Lianqiao (Forsythia), Niubangzi (Arctium fruit), etc.; for throat swelling and pain due to heat toxin and phlegm-fire accumulation, with mouth and tongue ulcers, often combined with Niubangzi, Lianqiao, Jiegeng (Platycodon root), as in Shegan Tang (射干汤). For throat swelling and pain, fresh herb juice can also be used alone for gargling.
2. Used for cough and asthma. For cough and asthma due to phlegm-heat obstructing the lungs, often combined with Sangbaipi (Morus bark), Huangqin (Scutellaria), Madouling (Aristolochia), as in Shegan Doulingsan (射干兜铃汤); for cough and asthma due to cold fluid obstructing the lungs with a sound like a water bird in the throat, combined with Mahuang (Ephedra), Xixin (Asarum), Banxia (Pinellia), Kuandonghua (Tussilago), as in Shegan Mahuang Tang (射干麻黄汤).
3. Used for scrofula, tuberculosis, and abdominal masses. For scrofula caused by phlegm and qi stagnation, often combined with Lianqiao, Xuanshen (Scrophularia), Chishao (Red peony root), Xiakucao (Prunella), as in Shegan Lianqiao Tang (射干连翘汤); for abdominal masses caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis, often combined with Biejia (Turtle shell), Wuchong (Eupolyphaga), Dahuang (Rhubarb), as in Biejia Jian Wan (鳖甲煎丸).
Additionally, this herb is used for sores, carbuncles, mumps, etc., either taken as a decoction or mashed and applied topically.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, decoction for washing; or powdered for throat insufflation; or mashed for topical application.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases without real heat internally, spleen deficiency with loose stools, and in pregnancy.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The rhizome mainly contains isoflavonoids, as well as belamcandinone, vanillin acetone, belamcandal, deacetylbelamcandal, and isobelmircandal.
2. Pharmacological effects: Shegan shows significant inhibitory effects on both early and late stages of inflammation; alcohol extracts of Shegan have certain antipyretic effects on experimentally induced fever in rats; alcohol extracts administered orally significantly increase sputum secretion in mice; aqueous decoctions have strong inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Bacillus anthracis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Salmonella typhi, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis; also show certain inhibitory effects on common pathogenic dermatophytes, herpes virus, adenovirus, and echovirus 11.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Chyluria: Shegan 15 g decocted with water, sugar added as needed, taken orally three times daily; or made into water pills, 4 g per dose, three times daily after meals. One course lasts 10 days. In 104 cases treated, 94 were cured, 10 ineffective. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1981, 22(5):364] (2) Chronic pharyngitis: 300 g pig fat rendered, add 150 g Shegan, simmer over low heat until dark yellow and scorched, remove dregs, cool to form an ointment; take one spoonful, 4–5 times daily as a gargle, continuous use for one month. In 17 cases treated, all were effective. [Sichuan Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1986, 4(12):23]
