[Overview] This herb is also known as Jindenghua, Mao Cigu, and Taibaiji. It is the pseudobulb of the Orchidaceae plants Cremastra appendiculata (D.Don) Makino, Pleione bulbocodioides (Franch.) Rolfe, or Pleione yunnanensis. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan provinces. The former is commonly called “Mao Cigu,” while the latter two are commonly called “Bingqiuzi.” It is harvested in summer and autumn by digging up, removing stems, leaves, and fibrous roots, washing clean, separating by size, then steaming or boiling in boiling water until thoroughly cooked, drying to half-dry, and then sun-drying.
[Properties] Sweet and slightly pungent in taste, cool in nature. Enters the Liver, Lung, and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, transforms phlegm and dissipates nodules.
[Applications] 1. Used for carbuncles, ulcers, scrofula, and tuberculosis. Can be taken internally or applied externally. Often combined with musk, Senecio scandens (Qianjinzi), Euphorbia (Daji), and Meretrix clam (Wenhe), as in the formula Yushudan. For carbuncles, it can be combined with Lonicera japonica (Jinyinhua), Taraxacum mongolicum (Pugongying), and Viola yedoensis (Zihuadiding); for scrofula, it is combined with Bupleurum (Chaihu), Laminaria (Kunbu), Fritillaria (Beimu), and Prunella vulgaris (Xiakucao).
2. Used for throat swelling and pain caused by heat toxin ascending upward, often combined with Sophora tonkinensis (Shandougen), Siegesbeckia (Zaoxiu), and Belamcanda (Shegan).
Additionally, Pseudobulbus Cremastrae seu Pleiones can be used for heatstroke with epigastric and abdominal distension and pain, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, and epilepsy caused by wind-phlegm.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–6 g, or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically or powdered and mixed for application.

[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb of Cremastra contains Cremastranone I and II.
2. Pharmacological effects: Intravenous injection of Cremastranone II in dogs shows antihypertensive effects.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Liver cirrhosis: Using compound Pseudobulbus Cremastra tablets (each tablet contains 0.1 g Pseudobulbus Cremastra, 0.1 g Eupolyphaga, 0.6 g Pangolin scale), taken orally three times daily, 5 tablets each time; some cases combined with spleen-strengthening and qi-benefiting decoctions. (2) Mammary hyperplasia: Using equal parts of Pseudobulbus Cremastra, Scutellaria barbata (Banzhilian), and Cervus nippon horn powder (Lujiaoshuang), ground into fine powder and made into pills the size of wutong seeds. Dosage: 4 g each time, twice daily with warm water. One hundred cases treated: 34 cured, 32 markedly effective, 27 improved, 7 ineffective; total effective rate 93%. (3) Cervical cancer: Using 18 g Pseudobulbus Cremastra, 18 g potassium alum (Kufan), 0.9 g musk, ground into fine powder, mixed with glutinous rice flour and water to form “T”-shaped or round nail-shaped suppositories. Inserted into the cervix and tumor tissue, 1–3 pieces each time, generally medicated every 3–5 days, continuously for 3–4 times. After tumor tissue coagulates, necroses, and falls off spontaneously, switched to Yuhong ointment once daily. Eleven cases treated, all achieved recent clinical cure. (4) Thrombotic superficial phlebitis: Using 90 g Pseudobulbus Cremastra, ground and soaked in 500 ml 75% ethanol for 7 days before use. When used, pour a small amount of the liquid into the palm and rub vigorously on the affected area until the skin feels warm, 3–5 times daily. Fifty cases treated: 42 cured, 6 good, 2 ineffective.
