[Overview] This herb is also known as Wild Orchid, Large-flowered Thistle, Ghost Hemp, and Big-headed Weng. It is the root of Rhaponticum uniflorum (L.) DC., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is mainly produced in Hebei, with additional production in Liaoning, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Shandong, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Inner Mongolia, among which Hebei has the largest yield. The roots are harvested in spring and autumn, with fibrous roots and soil removed, then dried in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Stomach meridian.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, reduces abscesses, and promotes lactation.

[Applications]
1. Used for heat toxin abscesses, scrofula, and mumps. This herb detoxifies and promotes lactation, so it is often used to treat early-stage breast abscess with redness, swelling, and pain, commonly combined with Trichosanthes fruit (Gualou), Gleditsia sinensis thorn (Zaojiao ci), dandelion (Pugongying), and Angelica dahurica (Baizhi). For treating carbuncles and swelling toxins, it is often paired with Forsythia (Lianqiao), Honeysuckle (Jinyinhua), dandelion, or combined with Astragalus (Huangqi) and Forsythia, as in Loulu Decoction (Loulu Tang). For mumps, it can be combined with Isatis root (Banlangen) and Folium Isatidis (Daqingye). For scrofula and tuberculosis, it is used with Prunella vulgaris (Xiakucao), Forsythia, and Fritillaria (Beimu).
2. Used for insufficient lactation postpartum, often combined with Pangolin scales (Chuanshanjia), Vaccaria seed (Wangbuliuxing), and rice paper plant pith (Tongcao). If postpartum qi and blood deficiency cause insufficient milk, it can be combined with Astragalus, Angelica sinensis (Danggui), and pig’s trotters.
3. Used for wind-damp obstruction causing muscle and tendon spasms, it can be combined with earthworm (Dilong), as in Gusheng Powder (Gu Sheng San).
Additionally, this herb can be used for heat toxin dysentery with blood, hemorrhoidal bleeding, and itchy skin rashes.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically, or fresh herb pounded and applied.
