[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The twigs contain seven alkaloids named Kumu alkaloids A, B, C, D, E, F, and H. The wood has yielded several compounds including picrasmin, isopicrasmin, quassin, picrasmin hemiacetate, and picrasmin lactone, as well as 2,6-dimethoxyquinone and 2,4-dichloro-6-aminopyridine.
2. Pharmacological effects: Picrasmin B isolated from Picrasma inhibits the growth of lymphocytic leukemia P388 cell line in vitro; it also inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and Shigella dysenteriae. Picrasmin shows in vitro inhibitory effects on amoebae and trichomonads; exhibits antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus in vitro; total alkaloids from Picrasma have antihypertensive effects.
3. Clinical reports: Hypertension—oral administration of Picrasma slices (each containing 3 mg total alkaloids), three times daily, one slice each time. In a total of 52 cases treated, the effective rate was 65.4% after 10 days. [Zhongyao Tongbao, 1983, 8(1):40]
