[Overview] This herb is also known as Wuye Cao, Laoguan Cao, Yakujiao Cao, and Laogua Zui. It is the aerial part of plants from the Geraniaceae family: Erodium stephanianum Willd. (commonly called “Long-beaked Herba Geranii”), Geranium wilfordii Maxim., or Geranium carolinianum L. (both commonly called “Short-beaked Herba Geranii”). It is distributed throughout most regions of China. The aerial parts are harvested in summer and autumn when the fruits are about to mature, then cleaned of soil and impurities and dried in the sun.
[Properties] Bitter and slightly pungent in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Liver and Large Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Dispel wind and eliminate dampness, unblock the channels and collaterals, activate blood circulation and reduce swelling.
[Applications]
1. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction syndrome; can be decocted with Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi), Angelica Sinensis (Danggui), Safflower (Honghua), Red Peony Root (Chishao), etc.; also combined with Tripterygium wilfordii (Dinggong Teng), Siegesbeckia (Xixian Cao), Mulberry Twig (Sangzhi), etc., to prepare medicinal wine for internal use to treat rheumatic bone pain.
2. Used for diarrhea and dysentery. For acute and chronic diarrhea, it can be combined with Setaria viridis (Fengweicao) or red dates; for heat-toxin dysentery, it can be combined with Coptis (Huanglian), Pulsatilla (Baitouweng), and Purslane (Machixian).
3. Used for traumatic injuries and fractures; can be pounded and mixed with wine, heated and applied externally; can also be combined with Angelica Sinensis (Danggui), Peach Kernel (Taoren), and Safflower (Honghua) for simultaneous internal use.
4. Used for sores, ulcers, and abscesses; can be used both internally and externally. When combined with Dandelion (Pugongying), Honeysuckle (Jinyinhua), and Viola (Zihuadiding), the therapeutic effect is enhanced. This herb can also be made into an ointment for external use to treat eczema, burns, and scalds.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; or soaked in wine, or made into a paste. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and mixed with wine, heated and applied externally, or made into an ointment for topical application.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include tannins, volatile oils, quercetin, and other pigments.
2. Pharmacology: Decoction of the whole herb shows significant inhibitory effects on catarrhal cocci, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri, β-hemolytic streptococcus, and pneumococcus; also inhibits Asian influenza A virus. The decoction has a marked inhibitory effect on experimental arthritis. Acetone, water, and hot water extracts, as well as tannins from Herba Geranii, reduce elevated alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase levels in rheumatism models, indicating hepatoprotective effects. The tannins can lower serum total cholesterol and lipid peroxides, thus exhibiting anti-lipid peroxidation damage effects.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Acute pharyngitis: Herba Geranii mixture (1 g herb per ml), dosage for children under 3 years old 5 ml, 3–8 years 10 ml, 8–14 years 15 ml, taken three times daily. A total of 45 cases treated, all cured. [Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1998,(2):120]
2) Mammary gland hyperplasia: 30–50 ml of Herba Geranii taken as tea or decoction. A total of 58 cases treated, with an overall effective rate of 93.2%. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1983,(9):30]
3) Herpes zoster: Herba Geranii pounded into a paste, mixed with a small amount of vinegar to form a paste, applied to affected areas once daily. Over 30 cases treated with good results; no pain after medication and no scarring after healing. [Chinese Rural Doctor, 1992,(1):36]
