[Overview] This herb is also known as Zongmao, Zongshupi Mao, and Zongpi. It is the petiole of Trachycarpus fortunei (Hook.f.) H.Wendl., a plant of the Arecaceae (Palm) family. It is produced in Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and other regions. It can be harvested year-round, generally collected between September and October by cutting the lower part of old petioles and sheath pieces, removing the fibrous palm hairs, and drying in the sun.
[Properties] Bitter and astringent in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Lung, Liver, and Large Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Astringent and hemostatic.
[Applications] Used for various types of bleeding such as hematemesis, hematochezia, hematuria, and metrorrhagia without blood stasis. For persistent epistaxis, it can be ground into powder and insufflated nasally, or combined with Cirsium (Ci Ji), Birch bark (Hua Pi), Dragon bone (Long Gu), etc., ground into powder and taken with rice wine, as in the formula Zonglu San (棕榈散). For continuous metrorrhagia in women, it can be used together with Mugwort leaf (Ai Ye), charred lotus rhizome node (Ou Jie Tan), charred cattail pollen (Pu Huang Tan), etc. For intestinal wind with bloody diarrhea and anal pain, it can be combined with Sophora japonica fruit (Huai Jiao) and Melia bark (Ku Lian Pi), as in the formula Mo Yu Dan (墨玉丹). If hematemesis is profuse with bright red blood, red tongue, and rapid pulse indicating reckless movement of blood heat, it should be combined with Daji (Herba Cirsii Japonici), Ba Ye (Cypress leaf), Mudan Pi (Moutan cortex), Dahuang (Rhei radix et rhizoma), as in the formula Shi Hui San (十灰散). If due to spleen failing to control blood and prolonged duration, combine with Huang Qi (Astragali radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis macrocephalae rhizoma), Long Gu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi), and Mu Li (Ostreae concha). For traumatic bleeding, charred powder is often applied externally.
Additionally, this herb can be used for leukorrhea in women, dysentery with undigested food, urinary retention, and can treat hypertension.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or ground powder. External use: appropriate amount, ground powder insufflated nasally or applied as a paste.
[Cautions] Not suitable for use alone when bleeding syndromes involve incomplete blood stasis.

1. Chemical constituents include large amounts of cellulose and tannins; hydrolysis of tannins yields α-catechin, gallic acid, and tannin-like substances.
