[Overview] This herb is also known as Aihao Ye, Jia Ai Ye, and Moxibustion Herb. It is the leaf of Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is produced in most regions of China, with the best quality coming from Qizhou, Hubei, known as “Qi Ai.” It is harvested in summer before flowering, impurities are removed, and then it is dried in the sun or shade.

[Properties] It tastes pungent and bitter, has a warm nature, and is slightly toxic. It enters the liver, spleen, and kidney meridians.

[Actions] Warms the meridians and stops bleeding, disperses cold and relieves pain, calms the fetus, dispels dampness and relieves itching.

[Applications] 1. Used for various bleeding syndromes. Because Artemisia Argyi Leaf is warm in nature, it is especially suitable for bleeding due to deficiency cold. For example, in cases of uterine bleeding caused by deficiency cold of the lower origin and instability of the Chong and Ren vessels, it is often combined with Ejiao (donkey-hide gelatin), Danggui (Angelica sinensis), and Dihuang (Rehmannia glutinosa), as in the formula Jiao Ai Tang (Decoction of Ejiao and Ai Ye). For vomiting blood or nosebleeds due to middle burner yang deficiency with blood not returning to the vessels, it can be combined with Ganjiang (dried ginger), Ce Bai Ye (Platycladus leaf), etc., as in Bai Ye Tang (Decoction of Platycladus Leaf). For bleeding due to reckless movement of hot blood, it can be combined with Sheng Di (raw Rehmannia) and Bai Ye, as in Si Sheng Wan (Four Raw Pill).
2. Used for cold pain in the lower abdomen due to deficiency cold of the lower origin or cold invading the uterus, irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, infertility due to uterine cold, and thin leukorrhea. It can be used alone or combined with Xiangfu (Cyperus rotundus), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), Baishao (Paeonia lactiflora), and Danggui. If deficiency cold is severe, it can be further combined with Wuzhuyu (Evodia rutaecarpa) and Rougui (Cinnamomum cassia). This herb can also be used for cold pain in the stomach region.
3. Used for restless fetus due to kidney deficiency, taken alone as a decoction or combined with Tusizi (Cuscuta seed), Sangjisheng (Taxillus), Xuduan (Dipsacus), Ejiao, etc.
Artemisia Argyi Leaf can be pounded into floss and made into moxa sticks or moxa cones for moxibustion on body surface acupoints, which can warm the meridians and unblock collaterals.

[Dosage and Administration] For internal use, decoct 3–9 g; or use in pills or powders; or squeeze for juice. For external use: appropriate amount, pounded into floss to make cones or moxa sticks for moxibustion; or pounded and applied; or decocted for fumigation and washing; or stir-fried and used warm for compresses. To warm the meridians and stop bleeding, use charred by stir-frying; otherwise use raw.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of yin deficiency with blood heat.

[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: Artemisia Argyi Leaf contains volatile oils, flavonoids, eucalyptol derivatives, triterpenoids, and elements such as nickel, cobalt, and aluminum.
2. Pharmacological effects: Artemisia Argyi Leaf significantly shortens bleeding and clotting times; its decoction and volatile oils have broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal effects; its oil antagonizes various allergic asthma types and has notable antitussive and expectorant effects, with bronchodilatory effects comparable to isoproterenol; its alcohol extract significantly inhibits ADP-induced platelet aggregation; it also promotes bile secretion and stimulates uterine contractions.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Neurodermatitis: Moxa floss is shaped into small cones about the size of a match head, several cones are placed on the lesion area coated with garlic juice, spaced 1.5 cm apart, ignited and burned out, ashes removed, and covered with sterile dressing, once every 10 days. In 120 cases treated, the recent cure rate was 89%. [Zhong Yi Za Zhi, 1988, (2): 7] 2) Hemorrhoids: Use 30 g moxa floss and 1–2 whole scorpions. The scorpion tail is embedded upward in the moxa floss, placed on a tile, and ignited inside a clean sputum basin or large earthenware pot. The patient cleans and dries the anus and buttocks, then sits on the smoke until the moxa floss burns out and the smoke dissipates, once daily, 3 times per course. In 100 cases of mixed and external hemorrhoids treated, 96 were cured, 4 improved, with a 100% effective rate and 96% cure rate. First decoct Ai Ye with 1500 ml water to 500 ml and soak the affected area; then roast the shelled apricot kernels over low heat until the shells blacken, remove kernels, grind to powder, and apply to lesions 3–4 times daily.
