[Overview] This product is also known as lacquer dregs, black lacquer, lacquer bottom, and lacquer foot. It is the dried resin processed from the lacquer tree Toxicodendron vernicifluum (Stokes) F.A. Barkley of the Anacardiaceae family. It is produced in Fujian, Jiangxi, Anhui, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, and other regions. The resin is collected by cutting the bark of the lacquer tree and gathering the naturally exuded sap, which is raw lacquer; after drying and solidifying into lumps, it becomes Toxicodendron Resin.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature, and toxic. Enters the liver and spleen meridians.

[Actions] Invigorates blood and dispels blood stasis; kills parasites and reduces accumulations.

[Applications]
1. Used for amenorrhea and abdominal masses. For example, to treat female amenorrhea with lower abdominal pain, it is combined with Angelica sinensis and Paeonia lactiflora in formulas such as Ganqi Decoction (干漆汤); to treat deficiency-induced emaciation with blood stasis and skin and nail deformities, it is often combined with Rheum palmatum, Mylabris, Rehmannia glutinosa, and Paeonia lactiflora in formulas such as Da Huang Mylabris Pill (大黄虫丸).
2. Used for parasitic accumulations and malnutrition. For intestinal parasitic diseases, it can be combined with Melia toosendan bark, Centipede, Areca catechu, etc.; for pediatric malnutrition, it is combined with aged rice and dried tangerine peel in formulas such as Ganqi Pill (干漆丸).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: mostly included in pills and powders, 2.4–4.5 g. External use: burned to produce smoke for fumigation. For internal use, it is advisable to stir-fry or calcine before use.

Pharmacological actions: The alcohol extract of Toxicodendron Resin has antispasmodic effects; the charcoal form can shorten bleeding and coagulation times, thus exerting hemostatic effects; small doses have a cardiotonic effect, while large doses inhibit the heart, lower blood pressure, constrict pupils, and paralyze the central nervous system.
