[Overview] This herb is also known as Baishi, Baizi, Bairen, and Ce Baizi. It is the mature seed of Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco, a plant of the Cupressaceae family. It is mainly produced in Shandong, Hebei, Shaanxi, Hubei, Gansu, and other regions. The mature cones are harvested in autumn and winter, sun-dried, impurities removed, and the seeds collected.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Heart, Kidney, and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Nourishes the Heart and calms the spirit; moistens the intestines and unblocks the bowels.

[Applications]
1. Used for palpitations, anxiety, forgetfulness, and insomnia. For Heart blood deficiency causing insufficient nourishment of the Heart, it is combined with Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), etc., as in Yangxin Tang (Nourish the Heart Decoction). For Yin deficiency and blood depletion, it is combined with Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Shendihuang, Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), etc., as in Baizi Yangxin Wan (Platycladi Seed Heart-Nourishing Pill). For Heart Yin deficiency with vexation, insomnia, and night sweating, it is often combined with Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Muli (Ostreae Concha), etc.
2. Used for constipation due to dryness of the intestines in elderly or postpartum deficiency, often combined with Yuliren (Pruni Semen), Songziren (Pinus Semen), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen), etc., as in Wuren Wan (Five Seed Pill).

1. Chemical constituents: The seeds contain cedrol, β-sitosterol, and diterpenoids such as hinokitiol lactone, 15,16-didehydro-13-oxohinokitiol-8(17)-ene-19-oic acid, dihydroxyhinokitiotriol acid, as well as fatty oils and saponins.
