[Overview] This herb is also known as Quan Chong, Scorpion, Pincer Scorpion, and Mountain Scorpion. It is the whole body of the scorpion species Buthus martensii Karsch from the family Buthidae. It is mainly produced in Shandong and Henan provinces, with additional production in Hebei, Anhui, Hubei, and Liaoning provinces. The scorpions are captured from late spring to early autumn, then cleaned of mud and sand, boiled in boiling water or boiling salt water until the entire body stiffens, removed, and dried in a ventilated, shaded place.

[Properties] Taste: pungent and salty; nature: neutral; toxic. Enters the Liver meridian.

[Actions] 1. Expels wind and stops spasms; unblocks the channels and stops pain; attacks toxins and disperses nodules.

[Applications] 1. Used for various wind-induced convulsions, often combined with centipede, as in the formula Zhijing San (止痉散). For high fever with convulsions and pediatric acute convulsions, it can be combined with antelope horn, uncaria, coptis, and stiff silkworm. For pediatric spleen deficiency with chronic convulsions, it can be combined with codonopsis, atractylodes, and gastrodia. For stroke with hand and foot spasms and convulsions, it can be combined with antelope horn, uncaria, and abalone shell. For stroke with facial paralysis, it can be combined with white aconite and stiff silkworm, as in the formula Qianzheng San (牵正散). For epilepsy with phlegm obstruction, it can be combined with alum-fried turmeric, acorus, and polygala. For tetanus with opisthotonos, it is often combined with arisaema, saposhnikovia, and cicada slough, as in the formula Wuhu Zhui Feng San (五虎追风散).
2. Used for painful obstruction (bi syndrome) and headache. For wind-damp painful obstruction with severe migratory pain that is stubborn and difficult to cure, it is often combined with white flower snake, earthworm, and saposhnikovia. For migraine, it can be combined with chuanxiong and angelica dahurica.
3. Used for sores, ulcers, swelling, and toxic nodules such as scrofula and tuberculosis. When cooked with sesame oil and combined with mountain gardenia and beeswax to make an ointment for external application, it can treat sores and carbuncles. For scrofula and tuberculosis, it can be combined with fried pangolin scales, walnut kernel, and red dates to make pills for internal use.
Additionally, fresh scorpion soaked in edible oil can be used topically for burns; fried scorpion in sesame oil taken internally can treat epidemic parotitis.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–6 g. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder mixed into ointments or oil for topical application.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of blood deficiency with wind generation and in pregnant women.

[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: Scorpio contains scorpion venom, a protein similar to snake venom neurotoxins. The crude venom contains various scorpion toxins including insect neurotoxins, crustacean neurotoxins, mammalian neurotoxins, antiepileptic peptides, analgesic peptides, and hyaluronidase. It also contains 17 amino acids such as aspartic acid and glutamic acid; 29 inorganic elements including potassium, sodium, phosphorus, and calcium; as well as cholesterol, lecithin, and ammonium salts.
2. Pharmacological effects: Scorpion powder can antagonize convulsions induced by strychnine and nicotine, though it is weaker than centipede and ineffective against convulsions caused by pentetrazol and cocaine. It has strong analgesic effects applicable to both visceral and musculoskeletal pain. The scorpion venom and antiepileptic peptides can counteract epilepsy induced by cephalosporins and mesaconitine in rats. Oral administration of tinctures and decoctions can cause significant and sustained blood pressure reduction. Extracts inhibit thrombus formation, reduce thrombus weight, prolong activated partial thromboplastin time and prothrombin time, and decrease antithrombin III activity and plasminogen content. Scorpion venom shows cytotoxic effects on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) cells in vitro within certain concentration ranges.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Pain syndromes: Using 50 g of whole scorpion (including tail), 30 g of centipede (head and legs removed), and 100 g of salvia, ground into powder and taken with sugar 10 g twice daily, 60 cases of acute pain were treated; 57 cases improved within 15 days [Journal of Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1989, 9(3):166]. 2) Epilepsy: One scorpion roasted and powdered mixed with 250 g fresh chive juice and 50 g brown sugar, steamed and taken on an empty stomach once daily, dosage adjusted by seizure frequency; 110 cases treated with a total effective rate of 95% [Sichuan Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1991,(11):12]. 3) Suppurative otitis media: 6 g roasted scorpion, 60 g calcined alum, and 3 g borneol ground into fine powder and blown into the ear canal twice daily; over 30 cases treated, generally cured within 3–5 days [Sichuan Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985,(6):封三]. 4) Whooping cough: One scorpion roasted to powder, taken with one boiled egg dipped in the powder twice daily; dosage adjusted by age (reduced for under 5 years, increased for over 5 years); 74 cases treated, all cured within 4–7 days [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1990, 25(3):114].
