[Overview] This item is also known as Gejie (蛤解), Gaxie (蛤蟹), and Dabihu (大壁虎). It is derived from the whole animal of the gecko species Gekko gecko Linnaeus, belonging to the family Gekkonidae. It is mainly produced in Guangxi, with Guangdong and Yunnan also producing it. It can be captured year-round. The abdomen is cut open to remove internal organs, blood is wiped clean with gauze, two bamboo strips are used to spread open the chest and abdomen to flatten the body and straighten the limbs, then dried over a low flame. Two geckos of the same size are paired and tied together.

[Applications]
1. Used for deficiency-induced chronic cough and asthma. For Lung and Kidney deficiency with wheezing and shortness of breath, inability to lie flat, often combined with Ren Shen (Ginseng), Hu Tao Rou (Walnut kernel), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra) and others.
2. Used for Kidney Yang deficiency with decline, impotence, seminal emission, excessive thirst and drinking. For Kidney deficiency causing impotence, seminal emission, premature ejaculation, often combined with Yin Yang Huo (Epimedium), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda root), Tu Si Zi (Cuscuta seed) and others; for Kidney deficiency with excessive thirst and frequent urination, often combined with Shu Di Huang (Rehmannia glutinosa), Huang Qi (Astragalus), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra) and others.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction 3–6 g; powdered 1–1.5 g; or incorporated into pills, powders; or soaked in wine.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in external wind-cold cough and in cases of Yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity.
