[Overview] This herb is also known as Huluba, bitter bean, Huba, and Jidou. It is the mature seed of the Fabaceae plant Trigonella foenum-graecum L. It is mainly produced in Anhui, Sichuan, Henan, and other regions, with Yunnan, Shaanxi, and Xinjiang also producing it. When the fruit matures in summer and autumn, the whole plant is harvested, seeds are removed, impurities are cleaned off, and then dried in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.

[Actions] Warms the Kidney, dispels cold, relieves pain.

[Applications]
1. Used for cold hernia, cold pain in the abdomen and hypochondrium, and cold-dampness-induced tinea pedis. For cold hernia abdominal pain caused by Kidney Yang deficiency and cold-damp stagnation, with symptoms such as testicular sagging and local coldness, it is often combined with Evodia rutaecarpa (Wu Zhu Yu), Fennel (Xiao Hui Xiang), and Melia toosendan (Chuan Lian Zi) in formulas such as Huluba Wan (胡芦巴丸). To treat Kidney Yang deficiency with internally generated cold evil causing abdominal and hypochondriac distension and pain, it is often combined with processed Aconite (Xu Fu Zi), sulfur, etc., also in Huluba Wan. For women with dysmenorrhea and lower abdominal cold pain, it can be combined with Fennel and Mugwort (Ai Ye). To treat cold-damp tinea pedis with symptoms of soreness, swelling, heavy coldness in both feet, leg and knee pain aggravated by cold, weakness when walking, and spasms or cramps, it is combined with Psoralea (Bu Gu Zhi), Papaya (Mu Gua), and Achyranthes (Niu Xi) in formulas such as Po Gu Zhi Wan (破故纸丸).
2. Used for deficiency cold diarrhea and dysentery, impotence, and spermatorrhea. To treat Spleen and Kidney deficiency cold with chronic diarrhea or early morning diarrhea, it is often combined with Psoralea (Bu Gu Zhi), Ginseng (Ren Shen), and Atractylodes (Bai Zhu). For Kidney Yang deficiency with diminished Mingmen fire causing impotence and spermatorrhea, it is often combined with Aconite (Fu Zi), Morinda (Ba Ji Tian), and Lycium (Gou Qi Zi).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4.5–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of Yin deficiency with fire blazing or damp-heat conditions.

Chemical constituents include trigonelline, gentianine, carpaine, choline, trigonelline, diosgenin saponins, β-sitosterol, yamogenin saponins, hyperoside, quercetin, luteolin, and other alkaloids and flavonoids.
